Daughter has adhd and just started Ritalin.

Answered 4 years ago

My daughter was diagnosed with adhd last year and on Monday we saw her paediatrician. I never liked the idea of medication but after seeing her attack her younger sister the paed recommended we try Ritalin. I’ve seen a huge improvement in her behaviour and she no longer hurts her sister. The thing is she now plays a lot in her room with her barbies and can stay in there for hours and I just wanted to know if this is what 5 year old girls are like that don’t have adhd? I’m not used to seeing her so calm and so gentle. I’m so happy she’s able to play and not hurt anyone or destroy the house but do kids that age play for that long on there own? I’m having anxiety over the fact I’ve medicated her and I don’t know if I’m over thinking. Please no judgement.

My daughter also played for hours on her own, right up to about age 10. She likes quiet time to do her own thing.

My girls as well. When the youngest is on her own while the others are at school she will be playing with her dolls or tea parties for hours.

My son was diagnosed at 12, we tried a few different ones, concerta, dexamphetimine etc. Really settled him but he was borderline suicidal. Spoke toa few other people who say their teens are on the adhd meds and antidepressants or anti-anxiety meds for that reason.
Seems too much drugs for a little kid, so he wanted to come off everything

Ignore all the rude comments. My nephew is diagnosed ADHD and is on ritalin also, he just has it for school days as he can not concentrate. It's been an absolute life saver for my sister. You've done the right thing for you and your family xxx and playing with babies is perfect! My 6yo still loves to play with her babies.

Thats true, I am ADD and the opposite to the headless chook, from the age of about 8 (when I learnt to read) I would spend countless hours reading quitely in my own world and I still do the same to this day

Mumma you have done the right thing by your daughter by medicating her. As a mum of 2 boys with ADHD and myself having ADD and been medicated it is a hard decision. My physc told ke not long ago that in a ADHD person has like a static radio going in their head that can't keep on the right station and the medication speeds the brain up (I think or the opposite) so it can function as the average brain does, hence the concentration

How’s her appetite? Has she friends and able to socialise appropriately? If everything else has improved, I’d not worry. Clearly now she can focus on a task and maintain if for some time.

My daughter would play on her own quietly for about an hour at that age. If you are worried talk to the pediatrician about it and maybe lower the dose.
