Most arrogant profession you've encountered?

Answered 3 years ago

Some of the most arrogant and pain in the arse people I've ever met conveniently have one thing in common - their job titles.
I recently was talking with a woman who was so up herself it was unreal. I just nodded and smiled, as I tend to do, and as usual with these people, she brought up what she does for a living. Which I'm not going to divulge at this point.
Now, I'm not assuming that EVERYONE in her role is like that, but it seems to me like a lot of them are.
So, my questions are: have you ever noticed a correlation between someones profession and their personality? Which industry do you think breeds the most buttheads? And do you think our jobs, impact our personalities?

Oh, and reminds me of a joke:

I am a teacher and I do find a couple of my teacher friends are quite whingy on social media. Yes, it's a demanding job, but I think that's pretty clear going into it, not sure what they expected.

I guess they think others don't appreciate that it's hard? Some parents do come out with the old "must be so nice spending time with kids all day, home at 3.30pm, loads of holidays" type line.

They are just selling a lifestyle and or product. The goal is for you to feel jealous of their perfect life so you go and buy what they are selling. They aren't necessarily awful people, I do believe it's morally questionable to sell the way they do, but everyone needs to earn a living. If you feel that strongly about it you need to look at your own self worth.

Yes, I have spoken with many of these influencers, hence why I said they are arrogant. Their contact is usually in the form of a demand. I make small-batch, apocalyptic-style clothing in my spare time, and have had quite a few contact me, wanting items for free for them to put on their IG stories, which lasts an hour.

They usually want my most expensive items, which are one-of-a-kind, and some get quite pissy when I reject them. I have even had some threatening to post about my business in an effort to damage it, simply because I told them that I don't want their services and that on the rare occasion, I seek out particular influences to collaborate with, who specialise in my niche (fashion), and not just post about any item/brand. I don't mention that last part. Just up to the 'specialised niche' part.

Yeah that free stuff thing is pathetic. I saw an article by an icecream vendor who says a so called influencer asked him for a free icecream and a shoutout to him in return. He said he told her no and the icecream was now double the price. Good on him

REPLY
Yep, I read that ice-cream story, too. She wanted 1-2 days worth of free ice-cream for her and fellow influencers at some event. Um, no.

Some are hideous in their demands. I've read plenty of stories (screenshots of conversations, too) where they try and harm businesses for telling them no. Some are reputable and provide mutual benefit, but most are wannabes, who chuck a tantrum at being told no. It's so pathetic to leave a one-star review for a restaurant, all because you mentioned to them that you're an 'influencer' and planned on posting about their restaurant but weren't given a discount or a free meal. Everyone has their hand out these days, demanding stuff from others and influencer-culture set that one ablaze.

Real estate people. Some are sweet as honey but so many are horrible pieces of work. In my experience anyways. If your job title practically extends to controlling and or threatening people, continually judging them (house inspections) it is no surprise that they aren't all lovely people. But then again, some really are lovely people - so I feel bad to say that. In my experience I have been stolen from or very nearly stolen from (with my bond) by 2 agents. And from a low socio-economic situation there was very little I could do due to circumstances outside of my control.

Real estate agents can't 'steal' your bond. It's held in trust by a 3rd party. Also, property managers are employed and paid by the owner - they work for the owner, not the tenant and it's their job to protect their client's asset. I find a lot of issues with tenants and owners is a lack of understanding of what the actual law/act is and unrealistic expectations. In a lot of cases the property managers hands are tied.

REPLY
Actually, they can steal your bond. By charging you fees for imaginary insults to the property; normal wear and tear, accusing you of leaving the place dirty even if you leave it much cleaner than you received it. Sun damage on curtains, pavers lifting due to wear and tear, gardens "supposedly" overgrown although they have been freshly mowed and cleaned up, "fake" water bills. It becomes a he said/she said situation and just goes in circles. I even got accused of changing locks because the real estate was too lazy to cut themselves a set of keys and I wasn't happy to be "on call" so they could do inspections.

REPLY
This is why you take lots of photos when you move in.

REPLY
All property managers must supply invoices and a statement of anything being deducted. If you don't agree, you can dispute it, if you cant agree between yourselves and the owner, then it goes to court to be sorted out. You should be supplied with a thorough Property condition report, including MANY photos, when you move in. You should go through this and check everything - there is room for you to tick that you agree or disagree and space to write your additional comments. Once you sign and return it, you are accepting that what is in that teport is true and correct. You should then get a signed copy back from the property manager, the owner also gets a copy. This document is what is used to do the bond inspection when a tenant vacates. If the property manager hasnt noted that paving is worn or backs of curtains are faded and you've signed off that you agree, then you could be in trouble. No matter how thorough a PCR is, somethings just dont get picked up until the house is lived in.

REPLY
I wrote this comment and feel pretty bad about it. Although my experiences with real estate agents have not been too positive at this point - we are all human. I believe it is a very poorly regulated industry and human greed is a typical state of humans in general. Skimming off the top, taking what we may feel entitled to, or in general wanting whatever we can take. I believe when bad practices become part of everyday life - it is very easy to hurt the most vulnerable people in society and leaves them with very little options to protect themselves or their families. It pushes people against the wall and can leave lasting damage to an individual's sense of stability. I don't think other people in more priviledged positions could even fully comprehend this.

There are ways to stand your ground and still maintain professionalism though. Without having to talk down to people. I recognise that it's an oddity these days, but there are people out there who don't think they're better than others just because they've studied longer.
For example, a cardiologist might have spent 6+ years studying, and be highly regarded in his field, but when his toilet backs up, does that make him better than the plumber who he calls? No. The amount of time someone spends behind a book or desk has no baring on their worth as a person.

Her kid is only in pre primary but she's an expert on parenting, because she's an aged care nurse. All the while batting her eyes at one of the dads (who is trying to work on his crumbling marriage), while her partner was waiting in the car. But its okay, she's an aged care nurse afterall, nothing she does is bad.

My barrister at family court was an up herself arrogant bitch, impatient with everyone except me 😁 worked well for me though. His solicitor was speaking in court and was taking her sweet time and was not getting to the point, she started tapping her long red perfectly manicured nails on the bench rolling her eyes, his solicitor turned to us paused and just stopped speaking. The judge told her to get to the point.
She walked around the court house like she owned the place, I had designated security due to DV incidents and omg she was so rude to them, they just walked either side of me looking blankly, she glared at them every time she went to speak to me privately, I told her I didn’t mind what they over heard and she snapped at them telling them she doesn’t trust their metal detectors either, they didn’t say a word.
We were waiting for a private room in the break and she turned around loudly telling everyone she doesn’t wait for anyone! It was confirmed The children’s dad had Left the building during the break so it’s not like she was scared of an incident arising.
I could just imagine meeting her at a dinner party , would be all about her for sure!

I think it's just the people being arrogant. Maybe they're attracted to particular jobs to feed their egos
