Home security- what do you do ? What do you use?

There have been a few break ins near me and I'd like to feel safer. Our windows have a security screen on them. Other then that not much going on security wise. I don't have a lot of money either so points for cheap tips please

A friend has a system set up, if the alarm goes off the doggy door opens and lets a very large dog in.

Have a motion detector light at the front and back - can get solar ones if that helps. Crunchy gravel paths. Keep doors locked. Don't leave boxes out the front that show you just got a new tv etc. Pretty much you want to deter the opportunistic thieves. Thieves that really want to get in will get in, whether it be smashing windows/doors or coming through the roof.
