He has to repair the part he damaged, and ban him from the house for 12 months.

He is family. You are going to have to get over it. He probably won’t even understand your point of view until he has saved, purchased, and had someone damage his property in the future. Sad, but just a fact.

Get lounge insurance when you buy an expensive lounge, it'll get repaired or replaced

I know, it's laughable to insure against potential risk...... it's an optional at most stores, it's only $100 - 200. You can also add accidental damage to your house insurance policy. It covers things like accidentally broken windows & tv's.

Most of those policies are junk. They won't insure carelessness & exclude almost everything.
I had my 6 year old washing machine's door repaired under consumer Law - twice. It should last a reasonable length of time.

You have every right to be pissed. I don't think you'll get a new couch out of him but get him to pay for upholstering at least. What an ass

I’d be more pissed that someone thought it was ok to smoke inside my house than burning the couch.

If I was a visitor and such a thing happened id at least offer to repair it..asking for a whole new couch is a bit of a stretch though
