Cultural Baby names

Answered 3 years ago

From a cultural background/ethnic group, and want to name baby a cultural family name, would you go with that name anyway knowing that half the Australians probably cannot pronounce the name or will make up a similar sounding name for the child?

We have a lovely baby name chosen, after both of our grandfathers, but just because it's easy for the family to pronounce, might not be for everyone and I'm worried if we should go with something more "Aussie ". Advice from others who have had similar experiences please

It's up to you, but tbh your child's name will probably get mispronounced a lot...I'd consider using the cultural name a second name.

You could always give them the name you have chosen as their first given name, then give them a second name that's easy to pronounce, and at school they can be known by their second name but they still have their traditional first name as their actual formal name.

I think that you should name your baby what you want. My name is pretty generic but I still have to spell it out and people pronouce it wrong all the time. People will get used it, there are a lot of different names in Australia and I love that fact that it has such meaning for you.

Maybe use that name as a middle name? I have a difficult name to pronounce and it's get frustrating particularly when talking on the phone and the person on the other end needs to get it right. Even if I spell it most of the time it's still wrong. Its not a cultural name, just different. When I named my kids I chose names that were easy to pronounce because of my experience. Is your surname a simple to spell and pronounce surname? Would your kid end up with a first name and surname that is difficult to spell and pronounce?
