I have never been on benefits, always worked, have savings and have just taken money from my super, cant get Job Keeper, got Job Seeker, but once the Coronavirus payment stops and it goes back to the Newstart amount I will probably have go kill myself if i cant find work, and at the moment it’s looking like the jobs we need are not going to be there.

How are you not eligible for either?

Neither am I but I’m ok as I have a lot of savings and my renters are still paying something, though less than normal?

^ have to agree! The saying “just get a job” makes me just go pfft! I am trying so hard to get a job, I have done 2 courses in business admin, I have volunteered, actually studying atm.

As soon as an employer hear single mum, 43 they shut down! I saw it happen in front of my face!

I applied to Coles and Woolies with a friends 16yr old, they got the job I didn’t!

It not so easy to “just get a job”! If I get the extra it will all be stashed

Door to door sales
Dishwashing
Cafes
Resteraunts
Cleaning
Driving
Factory jobs
Packing jobs

There is always work doing one of these.
Always
Since I was 16 I have never been out of work longer than 3 days not by choice
I took 10 years off to have kids came back into working took another 5 years off with my suprise baby and went back to work at the age of 46.

If you don’t live rural there is ALWAYS work.

For the person who is a sole parent:
Don’t tell the potential employer you’re a sole parent (not sure how this would even come up in an interview)
They don’t need to know your age until you agree to being employed by them and you’re filling in the paperwork for your contract.
Don’t put your date of birth on your resume - it’s irrelevant to how well you’ll perform - they’ll know soon enough how old you are when they meet you.

I have always been asked in interviews about my family situation, when they ask about availability.
It’s something they need to know especially when I can’t work outside of before and after school care hours or on weekends.

Employers get a general idea of your age when they look at your job history and any qualifications.

REPLY

"These are my available hours"

"Oh I see you're not available before/after school, what's your family situation like?"

"Well Bob, between the hours of 7am and 9am I like to stick pieces of raw chicken in my arse. Then from 3pm-6pm I look up and write out the various anti-discrimination laws regarding employment, with a focus on how you ARE NOT LEGALLY ALLOWED TO ENQUIRE ABOUT MY PERSONAL LIFE THAT DOES NOT RELATE TO WORK. 7pm onwards is for rollerskating and shit".

While I throughly enjoyed your humor real life isn't like that. You can't tell your potential employer to mind his own business not if you want the job.

REPLY

No, you're right. That's usually not the best approach. But, what you can say is that due to privacy laws you're unable to answer that question. Or give em the old single eyebrow raise.
And just to clarify, I'm a new commenter. I saw the comment about being asked about family and I remember being asked that myself. It pissed me off that others have to go through that like its 1924.
Employers know they're not allowed to ask that shit. A simple hesitation and look should give them the gentle nudge to move on with that question. And if you think you've been discriminated against and they've shut down during the interview, call them out. What do you have to lose. Maybe the next person they interview will reap the benefits of your courage. Or maybe, if they continue, and you escalate it to the fairwork ombudsman, the dickhead interviewing you will get fired, and a spot will open up there. God I hate people that deliberately flout the law and take advantage of peoples good manners. Fuckers

You do realise that all this money will have to be paid back at some point don't you? Higher taxes and a higher GST will come.

I hope this is a wake up call to those that are living pay to pay. Save some money and be responsible and don't rely on others to get you by.

Yes don’t you see by the last couple of threads, everything is everyone else’s
fault and this too will be the governments fault even though they basically made the country free for 6 months.

It is after all the governments responsility for everything And our whole life’s happiness and income.

I pay my taxes dammit. Free education, health care and strong welfare isn’t enough! Even when you give me even more when a pandemic happens (more than most countries )

God dammit ! It’s just not enough. 5”6 months is just a slap in the face

I actually agree with the content of the response completely, but the tone is unnecessary. I did read the heading that the Coronavirus is bringing out the online troll in us all on BBC.. I can see it everywhere now. She was asking a question and your response was just cruel, malicious and harsh. As I said, I get your argument, but if you wouldn’t speak to your friends like this, than why spread the rudeness

In my response, I do feel like it may actually be a long time- considering how quickly things have changed and are changing in regards to reducing lockdowns etc.. perhaps by then most things will be back and starting to pick up speed(of course maybe not). I do find it hard to imagine how that ‘many’ will manage as I am concerned about my own and my husbands employment, it is such an unknown time.. I just don’t feel safe even though I should feel safe.. things are moving so fast and the constant reassessing of everything leaves me in a state of constant unease and ‘waiting for something/a final decision’ mode

The dole should remain what it is with a 3 week exception that your eligible 4 times of 3 weeks at 500.

Unemployment payment of $500 may be too much, as in there will be no incentive to find work & get more money to live comfortably if $500 is 'enough'. Especially when other payments/benefits are added like rent assistance & the Health Care Card.
(I'm not referring to Pensioners, Parenting, Disability etc)
I am glad Australia has a good social security system, with lots of free stuff as previously mentioned (education & health). I am happy to contribute with my taxes, which will all go up, as previously suggested to pay for our current benefits to get through this crisis. It defineitky highlights the fact we all need better savings and support systems. I think our government has handled the pandemic really well so far, it must be a difficult time for them & all our health workers, teachers, retail workers and others workers on the front line.
Let's support each other to get through this Xx

ANSWER

I’m saving my $550 supplement to get me by after the supplement stops.
I have withdrawn from my super to get all my bills ahead.
I can’t believe it took the government this long to realise that the usual jobseeker amount is not enough to live on. Although if it were enough to live on a lot of people wouldn’t work.
I am thankful to live in a country that helps us at times like this.

Because your not suppose to live on it.

REPLY
Well actually you are supposed to live on it if you find yourself in the situation that you don’t have work. If it was more , more people would abuse it and make it a lifestyle choice. They don’t make it enough to live on comfortably otherwise many more people would choose not to work.

It’s got me stumped why people make it a lifestyle choice now given that it barely covers essentials.
I also don’t know how on earth the stereotype dole bludger affords cigarettes and booze.

No It’s not hard to live on $550 a week, it’s living on $550 a fortnight that is difficult (the payment jobseekers received before the pandemic)

ANSWER

I don’t think they will leave people high and dry. I think they will look at new ways to boost businesses and create the jobs that have now been lost between now and September. They need employers and employees to pay taxes. If anything I wouldn’t be surprised if all political parties start working together to fix the employment problem out of this because they all have a mutual interest - getting their wages paid. It will be interesting to see what they put in place to help people back into employment and businesses reopening.

I just saw on the news that Australia has the best (highest amount) economic response to this health crisis. So hold the faith a little bit, we are in a better position then every other country, and our Government has helped us the most. Even if the financial support stops in September, Australia and Australians have got a chance of returning to some kind of normal. If you were a worker before this all happened, there is every chance you will be ok at the end of it all.
