Addicts in your circle

Answered 5 years ago

Just curious how many addicts people know, how widespread it is in different forms, because I feel from personal experience it’s not so sweet behind closed doors. My mum is an alcoholic, and my hubby has gambled excessively, I think I’m in denial it’s an addiction, what about you? Friends too?

My mum, dad, step dad and siblings and their partners are all alcholics. My sister and her bf are ice and pot addicts.
Hubby is a porn addict. I'm sure a couple of his single mates are addicted by now too.
I used to be a binge drinker and had a very dangerous relationship with pills and party drugs in my younger days so I don't drink at all now and haven't taken drugs since before kids. I don't gable at all either apart from if there is a big jackpot in the lotto, then hubby and I will get a ticket just to dream a little. Like one of the other replies on here, I feel a really strong pull when it comes to gambling and I know it won't take much at all to get me sucked into that trap so I stay far away.

I’m at 5 :) I can’t help myself and at first my husband wasn’t keen... now he’s just as bad! I love giving them a second chance and happy home. Mine are all rescues. It’s nice to bond and see them relax and cuddle in bed and build a love with you

I don't know anyone personally, in my family or friend circles or wider circle of acquaintances. I come from a very conservative/christian background so maybe I just don't hear about it.

Actually I do know a couple people that smoke and I assume they are addicted (why else would you do it when it's 100% proven to cause cancer?). But even then vast majority of people I know well don't smoke, drink rarely, most wouldn't have even tried drugs.

Personally I've never tried a cigarette or any recreational drugs, never even been offered. And I've only been seriously drunk (like, can't remember it the next day) once or twice in my life. Living the quiet life over here.

I grew up in a low socioeconomic area. I know many addicts with different addictions. Gambling, ice, weed, alcohol, cigarettes, even met a few heroin and coke addicts in my time. Once you know their stories it makes it hard to judge their choices. A lot use it to escape their reality, the trauma they’ve been through and the things they do to get their fix.

Yep sure do. Siblings addicted to drugs. I’m addicted to coffee. tried smoking while younger and found it quite addictive. Didn’t have money or means to buy cigarettes though just found a full packet and smoked them with a mate until we got busted by a teacher that pulled me into the school office and told me she knows my mum well and she deserves better than that, don’t ever do it again otherwise she’ll tell my mum. I was so scared I never did it again. Thank god for that woman.
I also feel like I have an addictive personality so I’m very careful on what I will do; for that reason have never tried drugs

I don't know of anyone with an addiction in my family or friend circle. We have limited very close friends, but I guess in our wider circle of friends I would have less idea of what's going on in their lives.

Yeah if you aren't seeing someone everyday, it can be easier to believe the excuses they come up with to explain away the addiction! And people are good at lying/hiding things..

It legit took me a year to realise my boyfriend was an alcoholic!

I know a lot of addicts, to a rainbow of pleasures. My stepdad is an alcoholic. As are most of his family. My own father is addicted to drugs and alcohol. My brother is slowly slipping into alcoholism. My mother was addicted to pot for most of my childhood. I was reluctant to call it an addiction but when she chose pot over school shoes for me, that's a pretty big indicator. I've noticed that gambling is very enticing to me. And I know addiction runs in my family, so I regulate myself pretty harshly where that's concerned (no more than $5 can be put into the pokies on one night, if I'm by myself at them [say if hubby is in the bathroom or at the bar], but $10 if my husband is by my side at the machine; a scratchie may only be purchased once every 2 months or so; all other forms of betting are off limits emtirely).

If you are feeling the pull towards gambling please stop now. Don’t even start with a $5 limit because once the addiction takes hold you will up that dollar amount until you just can’t stop. I’m speaking from experience as my husband had a gambling addiction for four years. It tore our family apart. He had counselling and hasn’t gambled for two years but I know one slip and he’s back there. We had to remortgage our house and I don’t think we’ll ever get it paid off. It scares me. I lost trust in him. I have to be in charge of money now to keep us safe. It’s draining. Please don’t go there.

Thanks for your concern. To clarify though, I only ever go near pokies once every 2-3 years. I moved to WA where the only ones I've heard of are in the casino, and I refuse to go there. So it's only when we travel back interstate that I even have the chance. But I only allow it once whilst there. It's too easy to get too far into it. As you said, it's a slippery slope. Whilst I'm not addicted yet, I don't want to tempt fate too much. I've seen what it does to people, and I'm not prepared to allow my family to suffer that.
