How do homeschoolers deal with distractions?

Answered 4 years ago

I took my two highschool kids out of school this week. I’ve heard term two will likely be done via online learning. I have neighbours with young primary school aged kids ( kindy and year 1). They aren’t doing schooling with them as they are young. They’re good kids but they play outside all day and scream and yell a lot. Shutting doors and windows doesn’t help. Any suggestions to help my kids concentrate and stay focused with so much noise around?

Perhaps a note in the letterbox asking them when it would suit them to have their kids play inside ? Ask for 2x 1 hours per day for them to nominate?

It’s their yard though - they are allowed to play there as long as they like.

I know they are but maybe they are decent people who will accomodate.

This gonna sound harsh but your kids need to learn to deal with a bit of noise.
Do teach them to control their environment teach the to control their reactions.
It’s really a non issue.

It’s not just a bit of noise. It’s high pitched girl screaming and bikes slamming into the back shed. Yelling and laughing. All day. And it’s not a non issue when my kids are studying for ATAR.

It is a non issue.
Sorry.
I’m from Brazil and studied for my public university exam in the middle of rio city.
(I hate to use comparisons but sometimes it’s the only way to point out silliness )

Truely. It’s a non issue.

As I said your children cannot control others, but they can control themselves.

Teaching them to be sensitive won’t do anything for them.

Just because YOU think it’s a non issue doesn’t mean it isn’t for this lady. Obviously it is an issue for her if she’s asking for advice. Years 11 and 12 are extremely important years for kids. What if hers are studying to get into medicine or any other tough courses. Once you hit year 11 and 12, distractions in class decline because the kids in those classes want to learn. I’m sure there aren’t kids screaming and yelling in classroom lessons.

No, it’s still a non issue.
It’s an issue if you go by that mindset.

But if you stop focussing on little distractions and accuses then the issue quickly disappears.

The sound is not the issue.

The mentality is

Kudos to you that you found a method that works for you. That doesn't mean it's for everyone. It's a non issue for you, but clearly not for the other lady

Because you make excuses “good it works for you” doesn’t work for others.

She’s need to cut the complaining and excuses.

It’s fine. You don’t get peace and quite in a school do you?
So why can they all o a sudden struggle?

Tell them to suck it up and do it. More people need to do that now days.
It’s not other people’s responsibilities to make our lives more comfortable.

Noise cancelling headphones if she insists it’s a problem.
Or let her kids deal with a bit of real world. And figure out how to not let some noise effecct their concentration.
That’s as much a skill as study.

Silly to call me a troll,
Why not the person who first commented?

I just have my opinion, then explained it / defended my stance when it was questioned.

Are we seriously that precious that that is now considered trolling and children must be quite so nearly adult children next door must have silence to adult.
If your serious then I see how you think children who are nearly of adult age are incapable of being able to concentrate through background noise.

Wow that escalated. The lady going on about it being a non issue clearly thinks education is not important considering the amount of spelling and grammatical errors in her responses. Obviously no comprehension skills either because the OP asked for advice on dealing with distractions not whether anyone thinks it’s a non issue or not.

OP has asked for advice and/or suggestions, not judgement (non issue idiot)

The thing about making judgement off 3 paragraph is it leaves your judgements open to looking very foolish.

Infact my first comment shows how much I value education, and if you knew a lot about the world, or didn’t know but tried to quickly enlighten yourself you would know how extreemly difficult public university is in Brazil, its the equivalent of getting into an Ivy League American college.
I know people who studied for 2 years to get in.
I actually failed my first go and had to study another year to get in and am one of the smaller percent who made it into a public university with a public education.

I’m very very proud of my academic accomplishments and I speak and write in 4 languages, although English is my weakest for sure.

Just because it’s a blunt answer and one you don’t like why not just move on??
I gave constructive advice whether it’s one she chooses to take or not.
And it was one from extensive experience with the exact problem at hand 🤷🏾‍♀️

And yet you guys all keep replying to her? And clearly she has a few people who agree with her. Myself included. I would have just written stop teaching your kids to be fucking snowflakes. She was kinder than me that’s why I originally chose not to comment haha. So many sensitive snowflakes. You kids need to learn to deal with them.

You tell em! Bloody hell, Some people. Sometimes I wonder if the bubble wrap just pops it’s self out over time or these kids end up the sort who can’t do laundry at 24. Or spaz our on people in public cos they are doing something that irritates them.

You value education yet you can’t spell... “ extreemly “. And that’s just one word. You didn’t answer the OP’s question so go away. OP, put music on outside. It’ll drown out some of the noise but won’t be too loud inside the house. Or sometimes what I do is let my dog outside. He doesn’t like loud noises so he barks, then the kids become quieter and I bring my dog back inside.

^ she said English is her fourth language. Which you can see a little bit of it. How many languages do you not only speak but write in? And to add, writing is a whole new level of fluency. I can speak Italian but I still struggle to write it well, even more so on my phone cos the dictionaries spaz out on you. Op don’t worry extreemly makes total sense , and English is a bitch to write in. It doesn’t follow rules the way Latin languages do and basically does stupid shit just to mess with people. And people are asshole to people who are smart enough to learn whole new communication skills usually cos they don’t understand what an accomplishment it is to learn a new language after 20. Also her advice as I said was spot on. Tell the kids to toughen up.

Lol wow.

I’m the original commenter. I only use this site once a week usually, every 2/3 days at the moment being in isolation.

Y’all need to maybe get a book, or have more sex if you have a husband around. Is too much time on this site to give that many replies. Colour with your children, read lots of stories to them.

Maybe try to learn a new language during isolation💁🏽‍♀️😂🙊 something productive with you time, then if you have some time left over jump on here lol.

Headphones, soft background music, asking them to be quieter during school hours, moving to another part of the house, making sure they are aware the big school kids are working, give them some old quiet toys from your kids like jigsaw puzzles or a doll house or such.
And try to tune them out. Your kids probably have distractions at school too like friends so don’t let it be their excuse because things have changed at home - the teacher would probably tell them to get on with it anyway 😝

I'd agree with the noise cancelling headphones. Unfortunately there's nothing you can do about the other kids and I know it must be frustrating but it's reality. Good luck and I hope your kids do really well 💕
