I craved ice for the same reason you crave concrete and sand. I loved the crunch. I would have about 8 cups full of ice every day. It was so bad when we went out it was all I could think about.

OMG, this is the first time I have heard of someone else having to crunch ice during pregnancy! I used to freeze ice in thin shards and sit in bed and crunch ice, all 5 pregnancies!

I was listening to Dr Karl on triple j about the ice crunching - he said iron levels need to be checked as often this pica sign means low iron. Worth a mention if you’re currently pregnant.

Yes with my first. I craved wood sooooooo bad. To the point I used to lick wood. And then cry because I didn't understand what was wrong with me. I ended up telling a doctor and turns out my iron levels were at 1 and that possibly caused it. Super weird. I still remember that feeling

I'm amazing by how common it is! Did any of you discuss this with your midwives or doctors? I didn't. I kept mine to myself.

First pregnancy - Vicks, i was eating it and smelling it
Second pregnancy - Eucalyptus, eating and smelling, so much so that when i gave birth under my nose was red and sore.
Third pregnancy - Vicks nose inhalers, i would smell them and suck the ‘flavour’ out.

For each pregnancy i packed them with me for the hospital, but as soon as the baby was born, didnt touch any of it again.

I kept craving a cigarette, considering I didn't smoke. It was so bad I was dreaming about smoking.
Not really pica though

OP here - It's really odd. I just love chewing on small pieces of concrete or a small amount of sand. Not swallowing it, though. I've just become addicted to the crunch. I used to do it as a teenager, but completely stopped. It started up again during my first pregnancy last year, then went away after I gave birth. Now it's back with my second pregnancy...

I didn’t but know someone who also wanted to eat dirt - she ended up having low iron levels. Pica is fascinating!
