Can't cry on antidepressants?

Answered 3 years ago

I started fluoxetine 6 months ago and beforehand was crying all the time. Like all day. Thankfully they have been a lifesaver quite literally however now I can't cry at all? I am starting to feel very anxious from the inability to cry, my beloved dog just died and I neeeeeed to cry but can't. I am having a bone marrow biopsy in a few days thanks to everything else being ruled out but leukaemia. I need to fucking cry but the antidepressants seemed to have stopped me. Is this a thing? Anyone else?

Yes, I’ve had this every time I’ve taken it. My dad just died, followed by my best friend in a motorbike accident. I want to cry to let things out and can’t.

I have been on fluoxetine for seven or eight years. I couldn't cry when my mother-in-law died in 2017 nor when my father died in 2018. It's a very strange feeling ...

I've been on escitalopram for 3 years now and this is just a symptom of some antidepressants. When my cat passed away I cried for about 5 minutes on my own. Its tough because you can't share your sadness with the rest of your grieving family or release pent up emotions. I still feel the physical urge to cry, like a sneeze that won't come out. My only solution is to listen to very emotional music, it's "hypnotic" and really helps me out personally.

I've been on celexa for the past four years. Just lately is when i realized that I can't cry, but not only that, but it's like I feel numb.
I would never get off my 20 mg pills, because i know that I would never want to go back to depression. Depression hurts too much! So I just don't cry, so is life....

This is a common complaint. Talk to your doctor about lowering your dosage. It's not that you can't cry, physically. You drop a sledgehammer on your toe and you can wail away, but it limits your ability to feel your emotions. This includes happiness, love, sorrow, greif... things you need to feel to work through them. Usually, you can still control your depression on a lower dose, but also have your deep feelings back.
