Would you embark on a new career at 36yrs old?

My bestie wants to change careers. She has enrolled in a uni course and will be 37 years old by the time she graduates. I admire her, but am not sure I’d be brave enough to do it. Would you? Has anyone done it? What did you end up doing and did it make you happy?

I started my undergraduate degree at 38. I did a CT Bachelor of Psychological Science, part time so I could still be there for my children who were smaller at the time. I am about to start Honours. I’ve really enjoyed it. I’ve also done really well with grades & met some lovely people, made some great friends. I’m now 45 and have enjoyed it, even the challenges.

I enrolled in an aged care Certificate IV at the age of 56. Studying was much easier than "at school". It was online for 12 months.

I decided I needed a career change at 37. Graduated at 41. I'm now a nurse and I love it. I raised a difficult teenage boy and his little brother whilst working and studying. My boys are both good people, I have heaps of work and I look after myself financially. None of it was easy but it was definitely worth the sacrifices and the tears.

I’m 38 and going into my second year of bachelor of psychology and counseling. It’s the best decision I’ve made. My age has given me life experience that is relevant to what I’m studying.

I started my Bachelor of Nursing when I was 43. Finished just over a year ago and have just completed a Post Grad. It’s the best thing I ever did. Age shouldn’t be a barrier if it’s your dream. Go for it

I started studying ot age 32 finished aged 37. Have a great job and more money. Lone the profession and don't regret the study! And being mature age helped me in getting a job over my younger peers due to life experience

I'm an occupational therapist and it's such a fantastic job! I work in mental health field but there are so many areas for ot you could never get bored!

37 really isn't old, so of course i would if i wasn't happy!

Age really is just a number. I swapped industries and used my core profession to do it. I went back to school while working at 44 and am now moving up the ladder, I put it in hold when the kids were little don’t regret it one bit.

Yes I enrolled in Uni aged 36, Graduated at 40 to become a teacher. I had spent my previous working life in Banking and hospitality.

I'm 35 and have been considering a career change for a while! I just can't decide on what else I want to do.
I think a career change at any age is amazing and takes strength. But the alternative is being unhappy for possibly 20-30 more years of working..no thanks! Good on your friend!

I was 40. If it makes her happy, why not. I chose online learning, I now have the job I've wanted since I was in primary school.

She has 30 or more years of work life ahead of her so if she wants to change careers she should go for it. 30 years is a long time to be unhappy on your career. Support her instead of worrying if she’s too old, which she certainly is not.

This is a good answer...we only have one life, please don’t waste it worrying what others think, after 5years no will know what career she started in aswell, and it will be a great story for others

I left my job in retail to study to become a pediatrician at age 33, I'm now 38 and just starting my career 😊 I guess it may be a little different because people automatically assume I have been a doctor for a long time, age looks like seniority in med, not many people choose a 20- something doctor if they can help it, sad but true.

Absolutely I would! I'll be 37 when both my kids are in full time school and I go back to work. I haven't really had a 'career' job. I was doing aged care work for a few years before I had kids and stopped working, but I don't really want to go back to that (at least not straight away). So I'll be up for something new, although not necessarily something I need to study for. Another 30 years to work is a long time!

I thought changing careers at 25 was too old. I regret not going back to uni. At 48 I changed my career. Have my own business and loving it
