School involvement

Answered 5 years ago

Was curious if parents on PTAs or those who help out/are quite active in school seem to have their kids favoured or recognised by the school more? I’ve noticed the same kids seem to get a high amount of awards or are mentioned in newsletters and wonder if they’re just amazingly talented or if it’s a bit because of their parents role?

One of the mums at our school is a photographer. Whenever the school wants photos done, it is always of her kids and the P&C mums kids. But that’s as far as it goes. Awards are given to kids who deserve them, no special treatment.

I served on school council at high school my kids did not get special treatment nor did I expect or ask for it. My kids were more engaged as a result of me showing an interest same for their sports. You take an interest they will too.

I think the research actuallyshows that kids who have parents activity involved, do better in school all over. I think it makes sense as the parents are much more in the loop and can get more ideas on how their child may need support or ..perhaps they just excessively care about their kids doing really well in school... Hence they get vested in living through their kids too

Excessively caring can be a big problem for the poor kids. Ask my stressed Chinese friends!

I'm not involved with my son's school and my son still gets multiple awards and constantly praised by teachers. I get stopped at pick up by teachers that have his class for relief classes occasionally to tell me what a great kid he is.
And he is a great child, I just don't have the time to spend at school as I have younger kids too and prefer to spend my time with them.

I don’t do anything at all for the school (I hate volunteering and I don’t want to join anything) but my child still wins multiple awards each year. Yes, some kids just are amazingly talented.

I used to be skeptical like that too. But one of my friends is a P & F mum and her daughter is often awarded and praised in school. And she deserves every bit of it. She's a great kid and genuinely tries to embody everything the school stands for. I know my friend used to not involve herself within the school. Then once her daughter started getting leadership opportunities offered to her, and they began grooming her to become a prefect, my friend wanted to be there. She took on a role within the parents and friends association and hasn't looked back.
Her son is in my daughters year and even though my friend is still heavily involved within the school, the boy doesn't receive many awards or extra opportunities. He struggles in class and even with his mum at the school most days, he still acts out.

Maybe the parents who are highly involved in school and highly dedicated to encouraging their children to do things within the school and extra school stuff.

I don't really know because I'm not involved at school and I don't know members of the parents committee
