If you get an inheritance, will it affect your Centrelink benefits?

Answered 4 years ago

Not a huge inheritance, say $25,000. Do Centrelink count it as an income?

I was on a pension and I inherited $70,000 a few years ago. It didn't effect my pension one little bit. I did the right thing. I went to C/L and showed them the letters and a bank statement. Please ignore the trolls. It's nothing personal. They're just very bored and even more uneducated. Trolling is the only thing they can do (and they're not even any good at that)
I hope your inheritance helps you out, even just a little bit. 💕

Thanks for your help. It’s actually for my mum. She’s on the aged pension but her mum is dying so she’ll receive an inheritance. I wasn’t sure if it would cut her pension off. I’ve never received CL payments myself so I’m not sure how it all works. Thanks for showing kindness in this stressful time. I appreciate it.

Yes, i read an article in my local paper about this happening to an elderly lady, she received a large sum of cash inheritence which she gifted on to her children and was penalized greatly

Op, I'm the one who inherited the $70g. I can assure you that my disability pension was not effected by even a cent. The lady who claims im a liar, that's on you. I don't really give a shit what you think. I don't know why her story is different. Maybe they've made a lot of changes in the 15 years. Who knows. All I can tell you is my experience. To be on the safe side, do what I did and try to get into C/L if at all possible. You can get everything done right then and there 💕

my BIL inherited $45,000 6 months ago and it has not effected his disability either. I know this for a fact because I'm the one who took him to centrelink to declare his coming into money. They said that recipients are allowed to receive a one time lump sum in the form of an inheritance. I'm not sure why some are affected and others not. I thought it applied to everyone

Good for you. At least you'll get it from them directly and you will walk out with a receipt number for your visit 😊
