Should I become a SAHM?

Answered 3 years ago

Hey! I have a 5 month old daughter. I am 25, husband is 31. I am currently on maternity leave. I was earning £25k he earns £80k so he earns a lot more and money isn't an issue. Haven't decided whether to go back to work yet, just wondering how you guys all find it? I am a bit worried that I might get a bit bored and lonely especially when my daughter and any future kids are older and maybe will miss being intellectually challenged. Also worry if something bad happened to our marriage I would be financially dependant on him and in an extremely bad situation. But want to spend as much time with my daughter as possible and be there for her more. How have you all found it and would you reccomend it for me?

I love it absolutely no regrets! I went down to 1 day a week to keep my hand in and financial independence. Its been the best decision I've made. Moneys tighter but we have all benefited from this arrangement esp the children!

I loved it, never a dull moment. You will never have the opportunity to get those precious early years back so make the most of them with this opportunity. I didn’t like been financially independent but once I let the ego side of it go it was all good. I was off for 8.5 years & slotted right back into my old career, I didn’t lose out because of my time off. Feel very lucky & would never do it any other way looking back. Money was exceedingly tight but you have the rest of your life to work & make money but no other opportunity for these special years.

Do you plan on having more children? If so, I'd consider keeping your job just in case, that way you have more financial flexibiliy.

Why not switch to part time? That way you can have the best of both worlds?

You could always keep your job, and look for something part time and do a swap then?
