Sons circumcision

Answered 1 year ago

My son was circumcised after birth and now that we’re home I’m starting to notice that while it’s healing it still covers majority of his head almost as if he wasn’t circumcised at all. His father isn’t in the picture and either is my father. Is this a part of the healing process and should I have done more research into circumcision. If I’m honest I don’t know too much about it.

My sons were done while we were living in the US (they were born there) and they both had all the skin removed so the head is completely exposed. Might be worth visiting a specialist.

I recall reading that in the US the most common technique is one that generally removes more skin. This means that there is rarely enough skin to go over the head, and the remaining skin is usually smooth on the shaft with no wrinkles even when soft.
The US technique also leaves the scar further away from the head, apparently. The overall result is more of a "classic" circumcised look.
In Australia the most common technique is one that can leave more skin and usually leaves enough to bunch up behind the glans and even roll over the head.
Sorry for TMI. I did do my research thoroughly when I looked into it!

I have been with someone who had a cut like this, while soft he looked like he had a shorter foreskin but when hard I could see he was cut, had a bit of movement in the skin but not much at all. My personal preference is uncircumcised

Interesting. My son was done a few years back but there was never any excess skin left. The head was always completely exposed.

I don't know if this is helpful to the OP or any other mums who are getting their sons circumcised, but as a heads up, it can look quite confronting for a while after the circumcision, but after a while, it does start to look a lot better.
My son was circumcised at four weeks old, using the plastibell method. When the plastibell came off, I thought that would be it, but no, it looked really gungey and still very swollen and red at that point. I worried so much that I took my son back to the clinic, only to be told that it would all be ok after another week, and sure enough, after another week, it looked heaps better. Now, three months on, I am very happy with how it looks and have no regrets getting it done.

I hope your son's circ has turned out ok? Did you get it checked out by the doctor?

I am starting to look into the ins amd outs of circumcision as my partner wants our baby boy to be circumcised. I am supportive of the idea from a health and hygiene point of view, but I do worry a little about the gamble we are making in terms of the cosmetic outcome. It just feels like a big leap of faith, handing bub over and hoping he ends up with a good result.

If you do decide to circumcise, IMO you have an obligation to research the different methods and their outcomes, and also track down a reputable practitioner.
As I said below, I did a lot of research about circumcision but didn't end up having a boy (and even if we had have, after doing the research we probably wouldn't have gone ahead with the op anyway).
I am sure most parents don't understand the different methods and what they can mean cosmetically and functionally. In their minds all circumcisions are the same.
However, they are not. Some tend to result in skin being bunched up behind the head when soft while others leave the skin on the shaft smooth and wrinkle-free (which means less skin movement when erect, or what's referred to as a "tight" circumcision).
Likewise, different methods result in the cut line (and thus the scar) being closer to the head of the penis of further down the shaft.
And there are some that tend to result in a darker scar than others (although this can depend on the practitioner as much as the method sometimes).
Finally, sometimes the frenulum (or "banjo string") under the head is removed and sometimes it's not.
When I was researching I found all this sort of information easily on the internet. It was a bit overwhelming actually and a reason that we probably wouldn't have had it done.
You're making a decision for him that he can't undo so please make sure you understand everything about the procedure and what the outcome will be.

I can highly recommend going with the Gentle Procedures clinic. There is one in Sydney, brisbane and Perth I think. Not only do they go the extra mile to make the experience pain free for bub (numbing cream and then local anaesthetic injection), but the method they use is the traditional straight cut with the mogen clamp. When my son was done, it literally took a few seconds and then it was done. It is a full circumcision, so no leftover skin, but not too much was taken off. It looks very neat.
I would highly recommend going with this clinic / method if you can.

If and when you get it done, just be prepared that it will not look great for the first week, but if you follow the aftercare instructions, it should all be ok after a week or two. The main thing is to use lots of vaseline at every change. The vaseline acts as a barrier from wee, and prevents the wound from sticking to the nappy during that first week. It also helps protect the head of the penis while it gets used to being in direct contact with the nappy. After two weeks it looked great. Despite my initial regrets in the first few days, I am now so pleased we had it done.

How long ago was your son's procedure? And has it changed during the healing process? Is it already healed now?
I need to look into this topic because I'm due to give birth to my boy soon, and hubby wants him to be circumcised as a baby. I am still not sure about it, mainly out of worry about something going wrong. Otherwise I'm happy to go along with hubby's wishes and have bub circumcised.

Have you gone back to the doctor who did your son? I'm sure it wouldn't be fun to have to re-do it, but is that an option?
Certainly of all the circumcisions I have ever seen, there is no remaining skin covering any part of the head, but maybe for little boys it's different until they get older?

If you do decide to go ahead please research the different methods and the different results they produce. Also please make sure you have someone reputable do it. You are making a decision that will be with him for life so you want to make sure it's done properly and with the best cosmetic result possible.

That sounds like good advice. I have just started to look into this for my son.
I know one method involves a plastic ring and the other is more of a traditional cut. I am still not sure what is the best way to go though, as i have read inconsistent reviews of each.

From what I understand the most common methods include Plastibell (which is where the ring stays on and falls off after a while and is the predominant method in Australia) and the Gomco clamp (which is very widely used in the USA and tends to result in more skin being removed and thus a tighter cut). Gomco can also result in the brown ring at the cut line and the scar well back from the head.
I didn't have a baby boy and if I had he probably wouldn't have been circumcised. However I remember what's above from when I was doing research.

If your son does have leftover skin that is coming forward over the head, make sure to keep applying vaseline all around where he was circumcised. This will prevent the skin from adhering to the head.
My nephew had a small adhesion which had to be pulled apart again by the doctor.
Luckily my son had a complete circumcision which means that the head is always exposed, but we still applied vaseline in the first three weeks to be on the safe side.

I would leave it alone if possible now and see how it heals. My husband was circumcised for medical reasons (foreskin was too tight to retract when hard and was causing pain during foreplay/sex).
All is ok now, but unlike your sons, his foreskin was completely taken away. Our sons have not been done but they're too young to pull it back yet.

Two of my sons have a perfectly normal looking circumsision and my youngest boys’ one is a bit loose. Not too much of a problem. I wouldn’t worry about it at all.

ANSWER

It sounds like he's got a loose circumcision. I've heard that this is how they tend to be done these days. It means there's more skin left, which results in the shaft skin not being very taut when erect (sorry if that's TMI). In times past, circumcisions were sometimes done very tightly, which caused pain or discomfort when the penis was erect.

You should have looked into this matter. Myself and my group and new mothers left our sons intact as it’s way more common to be intact. The father to my son is also uncircumcised. I hope you find the answer you are after.

^^^ You also don’t know whether this was recommended by a doctor for medical reasons or whether OP is from a culture of where this is standard practise.
It’s completely normal for it to look like that as he will grow into it. Nothing to worry about.

My partner had a son previous to our relationship and got him circumcised, from what I’ve seen it is like there is some foreskin left and covers roughly half of the end. I have 1 son from last relationship and 1 to my current partner and both are uncircumcised. My last few partners were uncircumcised and my current partner is the only circumcised one I’ve been with in a long time
