Is it strange to let your pet bird fly around the house?

Answered 5 years ago

Everyday my weiro is let out to fly around. We have bought an aviary but it needs to be put up. I did not think it was strange at all, I grew up with birds in the house but FIL has said it's strange and he does not know anyone that let's their pet birds fly around. My SIL won't come inside because of it, he doesn't bite or anything but likes to sit on peoples heads. Is it really that strange?

Yeah so gross they can't spread diseases to humans, they don't smell or leave hair anywhere or drag their ass around on the carpet and their shit doesn't smell and is easy to clean. Ewww.

^ever heard of bird flu? The rest I'll generally agree on. They can get smelly, but that's not an issue for a responsible owner who keeps the cage clean 🙂

Completely disagree birds smell just like any other animal. But their owners can’t smell them

They don't have a smell, the cages or pens do if they are dirty but birds don't.

Rabies is not present in Australia. Plus, you get it from the saliva of an infected mammal.

Yeah I have 3 dogs and I'm the first to say they stink, I really don't think many people would say they don't. I have never known a bird to stink, even the place I got mine from was full of birds and I could not smell them. Friends aviaries, zoos, wildlife parks etc and I'm yet to come across a smelly bird. Please explain the smell to me.

I know a few people that do it, just be really careful not to accidently squash it. My friend shut his budgie in a door😯

It’s different. Not too different from someone letting a snake or lizard roam around their house.

I wouldn’t go in your house either though i dislike birds immensely

I find it strange when people are scared of birds. Imagine if everyone had guard chickens 😆

Well, my Quaker really dislikes one of my sons. He's 23, so he can take care of himself, lol. But she will fly to try to attack him. If I say his name while she's on me, she'll try to attack me!

My Quaker parrot flies drying the house following me. When I got her she was clipped. She molted and I did not reclip her. She lives landing on my head, I just say shoulder and she'll fly down to it.

I think it's cruel to keep birds cooped up all the time. They're meant to fly

Lots of people have birds fly around the house. If people don't like it, they don't have to visit.

That's fine as long as the bird owner is happy to always go to the other persons house or meet up somewhere.

It depends on the person, perhaps the op might like to avoid her in-laws.

Well yeah. Where does it poop all over your house?? Some people might not want a bird in their hair.

I’ve owned a few birds when younger and we always let them out to fly as properly as they can inside our house. One bird would fly around our property and come in to the aviary at night and get lock in, mostly for his safety (and his desire for food).

I’ve also been friends with people who don’t ever cage their birds and to be honest it would get annoying cause they were an intelligent breed that would seek out attention from visitors. They also wouldn’t cage/separate the bird from non pet/bird people which I found pretty extreme considering some people were afraid of the birds but they still expected said people to visit

No way, they are great pets and should be allowed to roam free inside. Don’t listen to ya in-laws!!

Sorry I find it strange but I don’t really like animals much. You just have to realise some people do like animals and some don’t. And when having people over I would definitely cage them and then when it’s just your family then you do you.

My little fella has free range of the house but flies back to his cage when he's had enough stimulation. Maybe yor SIL is afraid. Would you consider putting him elsewhere when she's around?

My weiros are out most of the day and caged at night. As a kid our budgies were the same.

I know people who let their birds fly around, don't find it weird. But they would only be out for periods of the day, not the whole day. Can you keep them in their cage when the in laws are visiting? Kind of like how people put the dog out for visitors that don't like dogs.

I’ve got 2 weiros that are out of the cage through the day and sleep in cage at night 🤗

I had a couple of budgies growing up and we would let them out of their cage to fly about. It’s the only chance they got to fly really.
