How is your child travelling with sick days and being off school?

Answered 1 year ago

My children get sent home for the slightest sniffle, with Covid around I totally understand. I feel judged for sending my kids if they’re sick, even just slightly. But then keeping them home today because they were both sneezing and sniffling, I felt judged too as they had already missed out on the first 4 days of term because of a yet another cold. Surely this year has got to be a write off, absence-wise seeing as we all should be at home when sick. Can any teacher give an insight from what they have been told at school? Many many thanks.

Well a lot of people are sending their kids anyway. My DD in a long day care kindy has been off ill twice in the last month because others don't keep their sick kids home & it spreads through the whole centre. Grrrrrr!!!

Unfortunately you can't take a week off work every time your kid gets a cold.

Well my daughter was obviously ill so I had no choice but to take time off. I expect it was a dose & dump operation that caused it & it spread through her whole class.

Normally it's not such an issue, I get not being able to take time off, but it needs to be taken seriously in this pandemic environment.

Yes we send our daughter once a week to preschool, she goes there healthy comes home with a bug nearly every week. What is point of even sending her? Thinking about just keeping her home.

My son started coughing after a lunchtime game of basketball. Not sick, no fever, hasn’t coughed once since I got the call to pick him up. Cannot take him back to school unless he presents with a negative covid test. I yelled at my son for playing too hard that he bought on a cough lol

Yip! And then you get the attendance notice from the school to say it is low, but I’m constantly getting phoned to pick her up because she has coughed, had a runny nose and to keep her home for 48hrs! You just can not win!

Have you gotten a low attendance notice from school this year?? With a pandemic happening you would think they would be understanding 😱

I've had a kid home all week just becsuse of a sore throat. Otherwise perfectly fine, no cough, not even a sniffle

So covid can be positive and kids present with very few or no symptoms. The advice is to get the kids with even mild symptoms tested and keep them home because what’s the alternative?? Your unfortunate enough to return a positive test and then suddenly the whole facility has it. I can understand why there is caution ... and from a parents point of view I also understand why there is frustration

Im glad to see this question here, i was going to post something similar yesterday.... My kindy kid has missed all of this term so far because she has a runny nose... She has a ENT prob, waiting on grommets and her nose basically just pours all winter, so i am looking at having her off school till November it seems, not sure what to do!? She is fine to go to school and can wipe her own nose but she is not welcome. I gave my other girls the last two days off as well because one complained of a headache at school (and teacher said best to hve the next day off!) .. So basically ive had three well kids off school for the last two days.... Good bye employment...

Do you mean kindy, as in their first full year of school? Here in QLD kindy for my youngest is at a long day care centre, and I just pulled her out for the rest of the year as she was sick and then coughs and then not wanting to go. She is 4. Terrible time for us all 😫
