What does everyone think if the John Marsdens book "the art of growing up"? Are we all toxic parents, or is he just another baby boomer telling us we are doing it all wrong?

I haven't read it and don't plan to, I think he has a few points, but he seems very out of touch with our generation from what I have read about it. Perhaps someone needs to write "the art of minding your own business" and give him a copy. If you are looking for a copy of his new book, you will find with his other books in the fiction section.

I have read the book, I think he has some great ideas, but lacks understanding the emotional side of being a parent. I think having not had children himself, and the generation gap, he lacks a lot of perspective of modern parents.

Had to google him .... Initial opinion is just another self appointed expert who is using shame marketing to make money from his outdated opinion.
He doesn't understand that every family is different and we're tired of being told we're not good enough but, hey, he'll fix us in 300 pages.

That’s so silly to read your snap judgment. . I would hardly call someone with such a strong background in education, teaching and being a principal aswell, a self appointed expert. You sound like you are the expert on making quick judgments.. and I’m afraid from what I’ve seen of him, that you are way off the mark on your description of him, but I’m sure you won’t care.

I bought a copy but I haven't read it yet. I'm really interested to hear what he has to say. I respect his education ideals and strategies, he's an intelligent man and a creative thinker with decades of experience as a teacher and principal, and has (step) children of his own too. I love the idea of his school that encourages kids to play outdoors, take risks, get dirty, build practical life skills, etc. He usually seems to have quite different ideals to the generation that he grew up in so I wouldn't throw him in a certain basket based on his age.

I find his perspective refreshing, personally and would like to read his book to see if it has things in there that would inform me better. You can listen to him being interviews on Abc postcasts under conversations. In another interview I saw him talking about how parents are so judgemental of eachother, are too scared to raise their voices with their kids because of the social masks we put on(he said it far more eloquently), and I appreciated that, as someone who disciplines my kids regularly I struggle with other parents who I know, who don’t at all.

Parents being judgemental of each other, and exclusionist, and spiteful, is something I read and hear many young mothers complaining about all the time, on here and in other forums.

He may have a refreshing approach, but I have read too much crap labelled parents toxic, that I wouldn't bother with his book. Parents have too much of this nonsense already.
I'm glad to hear you don't find it too negative, hopefully you have had a better experience, or learnt what not to read earlier than I did.

Just another baby boomer wanting to remind us we are all crap. I can't imagine the book will sell very well.
