Massive anxiety attack Newborn issue Help please

Answered 4 years ago

So my newborn (he is my third) is ten days old and today he did his healthy hearing test and the nurse said both ears were shown as refer
So it was not a pass
She said come back in ten days and make sure i give him baths and ensure his ears are submerged and massage his ears etc
He was two weeks early and very mucusy when born
We left hospital within a two days so we had to go back after long weekend to do healthy hearing
Im so worried he is deaf .
Please tell me about your experiences?
Im devastated and cant wait to ten days

How old was your son when he had his tests?

Please don’t worry! (Ha, obviously you will!) ok heres my 2 cents, my third has a moderate hearing issue, but this is due to mucus ect in her ears and she will be getting grommets soon, which will fix the problem. Just because he was referred doesn’t mean he is stone cold deaf, it just means that on this day during this test he couldnt hear certain sounds, and this could be simply because of mucus or a other easy fix reasons.

Everyone of my daughters hearing tests have been different, if you are really fretting, to put your mind at ease you could make a huge ‘bang’ out of his sight and see if he reacts.

But why would his hearing test failed?

There may be left over fluid or debris in his ears, hence why you should try dislodge it by massaging his ears etc. My second failed his first test but passed his second test no worries. He's 2 now with no issues.

Worrying can’t change the outcome, it just makes you miserable. Instead, assume the best will happen, but know what your next steps will be if it doesn’t (eg: if next appt doesn’t go well, you live in a great country with access to some of the best treatment, therapy and support and you will follow through with these.) It is not the end of the world or of your child’s life, it is just a part of it. Xoxox

My son had a referral to go back too and it was just his ears blocked and they fixed themselves.

In saying that - i know a man who is deaf. He owns a business, has a very normal successful life and is extremely smart.

Right now all you can do is wait and hope the results are the best outcome, otherwise you plan your next move. Learn sign language, look at hearing aids, get prepared.

My friends 3rd child was born deaf. She had hearing aids implanted. Shes a beautiful hearted girl and is doing exceptionally well at school, can keep up with her brothers and doesn't miss a beat. It's not doom and gloom.
