I realise this is an old post, I have had an ongoing debt due to Centrelink payments for years, I was on parenting payment when I was with my now ex. He lied to me about his income every time I reported, yes I should have asked him for the payslips but didn’t.
I have done numerous tax returns and received several ftb adjustments since and they have taken zero.

I don't know if they will take it or not but I think they should. Benefits are a privilege. You've taken too much so you need to pay it back.

Benefits yes are a privledge. What if she didn't know? I didn't know that my long service leave counted as income. As it was a one off. Centrelink used it through the whole year. Making my income more than it actually was for that year. They also told me that any contributions to super is income as well. I didn't know. So now I owe as much as the OP. They made me feel like shit and scum and it was just misinformation on my part. I was only receiving 20 a fortnight. Wasn't even worth the drama.

Ignorance and stupidity are no excuse to take money you aren't meant to. Suck it up. I don't know why income from long service leave or wouldn't count. Seriously 😂

^^ that's why you should see a tax agent every now and then.

Why waste your money on a tax agent? They will Google the answer.
Trust me, don't waste your money. I was one.

I'm sorry, where did she say she wasn't planning on paying it back? It's quite easy to get overpaid centrelink by making a mistake or just forgetting to update your income estimate, and she said she's on a plan to pay it back, so she will. There's no reason to be horrible to her about it.

I had a debt, last year they didn’t take anything. This year they took the remainder of the debt out of the EOFY fax tax benefit balancing they do. We only had about $500 left owing on the debt and they took that out of our payment balance.

She doesn't state what her refund is. She's not saying it will cover the whole debt.

I'd plan for them to take the whole lot, then if they don't it's a bonus.
