Third man in gets charged, it is not self defence! even if you hit someone that is assaulting a little old lady charges can be laid. It’s up to the injured party if they wish to press charges. Then up to the court if there’s a conviction.

The law is currently written to deter people getting involved. There is no “self defence” in this country. People have been charged even when protecting themselves from people invading their own home and threatening them.

You made the choice to become engaged in an already violent situation, that comes with consequences.

So basically my friend can if the police or instigating person wants to be charged. That sounds bad. My friend already has a history...
Oh well his mess. Told him to stay out of peoples drama.

I think stop thinking of it as a competition for starters. Having children to out do one another is irresponsible and petty. The rules you state arw not rules and you do not have to abide by them at all. If you wish to have xmas at yours you plan it, send out invites and whoever comes is there if they dont their choice. You do not have to bow to family, you are an adult now.

Given you intentionally entered in a fight (you say you went in to break it up - prove it), and then engaged in the violence yourself (if you truly wanted to break up the fight its unclear how hitting someone would do that), I'd say yeah. You'll get charged. Were you clearly displaying any common indicators that you were entering the altercation as a peace keeper (a bright blue UN PEACE helmet, a white flag, a medic cross)? No? Then it's reasonable to assume whomever struck you saw you as an opponent. Which then is confirmed when you strike them back.
Acting in self defence is for when an unprovoked attack occurs, and when you have no alternative way to escape the violence other than to engage in one hit or one shove. Your whole aim in "acting in self defence" is to remove yourself from the situation. Not willingly plant yourself in harms way and then *shocked pikachu face* oH nO I wAs iNjUrEd.

Wasn't me was a friend. But given the injury my friend caused I fear he maybe charged with assualt. A bruise is one thing but the sounds of the injuries suggest self defense will be a stretch. I always told him to stay outta other peoples drama.

Further on that two witnesses were there, so I th iink its just up to police to work out whether charges will be laid. You are right though, its self defense if you block a punch or shove to get away what my friend did is not okay.

Technically you can be charged but whether it ends in conviction or not is a different story.
