Fair enough. If the grandparent is giving up there time and changing their own plans in order to accommodate the parents then I believe this is perfectly acceptable. The parents would otherwise pay for childcare and just because it is a relative doesnt meant that they should be taken advantage of and expecting ongoing childcare for free.

My mum regularly looks after my kids - 1 day per week, and some nights if we get in a bind with something else. She isn't currently working, but we will try take her out for dinner, buy flowers or giftcards to show appreciation.

I think each family would have their own situation and relationships and best not to judge others.

The grandmother in the article was working from home - which she had to cut back on when she babysat, so that changes it a bit. If I’m asking a parent not to work to have my child, I should pay them.

That's just weird. Maybe you can give some flowers or chocolates as a show of appreciation

If it's once in a blue moon then no but if it's a regular thing. Every week. Then yes they should! My mum drops off/picks up my girls from school once a week. She wont accept money so I take her to dinner every fortnight and pay. They're my children, not hers. She's doing me a favour so I like to offer money.

If it’s regular so you can work yes pay for the childcare and provide food.
