Today’s problem solved: The flannel to cotton sheet transition conundrum

Dear Aunty Sahm,

When do I take the flanny sheets off the bed and remake with cotton? It’s too warm some nights for flannelette but cotton are so cold on the cooler nights. Oh the indecision is killing me!

Please help.

MaggieAsk Aunty Sahm - Flannel Sheet Situation

I don’t know about you Maggie, but I personally love the transition seasons. With their warm sunny days and cool enough for an awesome night sleep-yness. But you are right, you do point out their only downfall. The flannel to cotton sheet transition conundrum.

There’s nothing worse than a few balmy nights in cotton, which is then tainted by a cold snap that has you heating the bed with hot water bottles and wearing your full flanny pj’s with bed socks ensemble to stay warm. Another night of this and the vacuum seal storage bags will be cracked open – a week after they’ve been popped away!

I’ve spent many a year changing back and forth too early only to have the weather deliver an incompatible weather change! I’m so glad you’ve come to me for help Maggie, after considerable trial and error, I think I’ve finally come up with an expert method to cover all bases.

The secret to success? A double sided underlay! Know what I’m talking about here? It’s wool on one side and cotton on the other and goes underneath your sheets. Now to ride through the aptly named transition season with grace and good nights of sleep, you must follow this simple program with your newly purchased double sided underlay and both cotton and flannelette sheet sets:

As the winter months come to an end, your underlay/sheet marriage should be that of wool underlay and flannelette sheet. As spring arrives change your sheets to cotton but keep your underlay wool side up. Pop those flannys away until they’re needed for the next transition season (Autumn) and then when you’re brave enough, flip that underlay over baby and feel the cool of cotton on cotton close to your skin.

Now that I’ve revealed this clever little tango you’ll never have to suffer a terrible night’s sleep again, well, during the transition seasons. Summer though, there’s no promises there.

xx Aunty S
