It’s icky, it’s eewy, but it’s what tickles others’ fancy when that time of the month comes…and they are just about to make it bloody hot!
If you’re nervous about the thought of getting it on while Aunt Flo has just arrived, but your partner seems to be up for it, don’t worry, there are ways to still have great sex while menstruating.
While you might be quite squeamish about the mess period sex can make, Shannon Chavez, a psychologist and certified sex therapist in Los Angeles says it can actually benefit you.
“Orgasm will release feel-good chemicals like oxytocin, dopamine, and endorphins (our body’s natural painkillers) that can ease the pain of menstrual cramps and bloating. Plus, more comfort around messiness can break down barriers to sexual enjoyment. Studies have shown that people who have higher arousal are less grossed out by bodily fluids and ‘messy period sex’,” she says.
So, here are some tips to have a great period sex. Enjoy!
1. Do it all the way in the shower.
Having sex in the shower not only cleans the mess brought about by period sex, it’s sexy — with the steam and the warm water running down your body and his’. Hot!
2. Move to the edge of the bed while at it.
If you want to avoid staining your bed sheets, move to the edge of the bed and hang your bum while you’re at it. It’s so simple and you and your partner can move in any way you want.
3. Blood can be a great lubricant.
Aunt Flo can be an instant lubricant for when you need to up the ante during sex. Carlen Costa, sexologist and relationship expert explains: “One of the great things about period sex is that you don’t need any lube because you’re already incredibly wet, which means some positions are actually easier for some women to be in rather than not.”
She also adds that having period sex doesn’t mean you can’t explore other positions. “Your vagina is actually more open and receptive at this time, so if there was a position you were trying to do, but it didn’t work so well in the past, now is the time,” she says.
4. Try spooning.
While you and your experiment different positions, spooning could be one of the best for women. “When you’re on your period, some women report more pelvic congestion, which is a heaviness that [may] trigger arousal,” Costa says. “This is why some women report wanting to have more sex while on their period, versus none at all.”
Emily Morse, Glamourcontributor and host of the Sex With Emily podcast explains that similar to missionary, you and your partner can play by spooning. “You can play with the depth of penetration and different angles to make sure it works for you,” she says.
5. Do it with blindfolds.
Having sex using blindfolds can make it more exciting by just using your other senses. Shallon Lester, author of dating memoir Exes and Ohs and YouTube sex and dating expert explains: “Your period is the perfect time to elevate sex by exploring other senses like sight and sound. Every sense will be heightened, and you can play around with sensations, from nails to nibbles, with more bang for your buck!”
6. Use a menstrual cup.
Period sex is actually one of the reasons why menstrual cups are invented. They allow penetrative, mess-free sex as it will be securely in place provided you placed them in right.
