All About Vaginoplasty

Who Can Perform One?

An accredited plastic surgeon. You can obtain a referral from your GP or gynaecologist.

If you have laxity of the vagina (stretching) and are not pregnant, you are a candidate for this surgery.

Recovery Time?

A vaginoplasty takes about an hour and is performed either under general or local anesthesia (with sedation).

The recovery time after a vaginoplasty is variable and is dependent on the individual. You can usually have sex after a week, provided there is no infection or bleeding at the site, although full sensation will not be felt for some time.

Women who still experience their periods will re-commence their cycle pretty quickly (within a month) and in a few cases, future vaginal childbirth may be possible but is considered undesirable. After all, you’ve just had surgery to tighten it up, why stretch it back out again!?

In male-to-female sex change surgeries, many trans females undergo vaginoplasty as part of their sexual transition. Recovery time is obviously a lot longer in these cases as there are other procedures in place to aid in the construction of the vaginal canal.

Extra Bits

Several plastic surgeons and gynaecologists are starting to market more and more procedures under the ‘vaginal rejuvenation’ umbrella. Usually bundled in with liposuction, boob jobs and face lifts, these procedures are aimed at women wanting a more youthful vagina (???) and/or enhanced sensation and pleasure. They include:

G-spot amplification where collagen is injected into the front wall of the vagina, theoretically increasing the surface area of the G-spot and making it easier to locate and stimulate.

Clitoral unhooding simply removing the ‘hood’ that covers the clitoris.

Revirgination the surgeon performs a hymenoplasty to restore the hymen that is broken when a women has sex for the first time. Seriously controversial amongst many cultures!bigstock Young sexy naked woman with so 20144807 e1489113622323 | Stay at Home Mum.com.au

  • Surgeon’s fee
  • Anaesthesiologist fee
  • Hospital costs
  • Follow-up visits during the first six weeks after surgery.

You can check with your private health fund if your procedure is covered, however most are not. If your procedure is considered reconstructive rather than cosmetic however, you may be covered. If your private fund does not have hospital cover, expect to pay an additional $2500 (AUD).
