I’ll never understand unisex nappies. I have two boys and one girl. Let me tell you now – there is no such thing as a ‘unisex’ nappy. Boys will always fill the front and girls need extra underneath, and no unisex nappy I’ve ever tried copes with both these situations perfectly.

Once I’d finished having three kids in three years, I had well and truly hung up any notion of trying to use cloth nappies. I was on a mission to find reliable nappies, which I also love to buy in bulk. But it was clear early on to me, girls and boys have separate needs when it comes to nappies.

Nappy changing tips for boys and girlsDealing With Nappy Rash

Boys have an uncanny ability to wee as soon as their nappy is off. Which can be often amusing – if you’re not the one changing the nappy. Boy’s bits should be facing downwards in the nappy. Make sure you position the penis so that it is down before you put the nappy on, keeping them dry.

Always wipe from front to back when changing a girl. Girls are more prone to UTI’s so it is important that you avoid getting any bacteria into the vagina. Opt for a sensitive fragrant free wipe when cleaning a little girl and limit the use of soap as it can irritate the vagina. You will need to clean the labia as well as the creases and folds on your baby’s legs, especially if she is chubby.

Nappies tailored for boys and girls

Huggies® nappies are the only nappies which are designed with tailored absorbency for both boys and girls. There’s always been more padding in the front for boys, and underneath for girls. They also make life easy with two kids in similar sized nappies – having them colour coded blue for boys and pink for girls.

But this week, the nappies looked different.

When I opened out the nappy, there were all these bobbly bits inside, which is the new 3D DryTouch layer. They actually sound like some sort of special effects, but for nappies. Those bobbly bits are the 3D part of the DryTouch layer as they pop out like in 3D. According to the Huggies website they are designed to keep your child’s skin drier for longer.

Well, on trialling the new design, they certainly lived up to their name. Huggies have tested their new nappies with hundreds of mums, and tens of thousands of nappies, and they said that the new DryTouch layer was better at absorbing urine and they were significantly drier than the previous nappy. But knowing how much urine I *usually* deal in, I gave it my own workout. On the kids of course. They really were better than ever, for two reasons;

  1. The 3D DryTouch layer has been introduced to all Crawler through to Junior sized nappies, so both nappy wearing children stayed dry and I stayed ASLEEP.
  2. The unique design absorbed and drew wetness away from their bottoms and sprang back perfectly dry, meaning both nappy wearing children stayed dry and I SLEPT IN. Yes. It is all true.

There is nothing worse than being woken at some ridiculously early hour of the morning to find that the nappy has failed to make it over the finish line. The sheets need changing, the child needs changing, and you need some coffee (and some different nappies).

Back by popular demand

If that wasn’t enough to get excited about – they have returned the much-loved stretchy grip tabs to the nappies! My little Houdini’s can whip off a nappy in the night faster than a bride’s knickers on her wedding night. After receiving feedback from some mums and dads who had been experiencing leakage and issues with the fit on their child, Huggies have listened and brought back the stretchy grip tabs. The tabs, which are made with the absorbent materials inside the nappies, have also been made longer than before – making it easier to pull on tight – without discomfort or little red marks on your babies delicate skin.

Let’s say it now. There is nothing worse than a nappy wardrobe dysfunction. Especially a full one. With active kids, stretchy tabs are a must, making sure they can run and jump, without losing their pants. It also means they can grow, without growing out of their nappies straight away.
