How to Make Homemade All-Purpose Cleaner

This recipe makes a fantastic homemade all-purpose cleaner that is perfect for just about every job around the home. With the average household now spending up to 20% of their total grocery bill on cleaning products for their home, it is no wonder that more and more people are starting to make their own cleaning products at home!

It is so easy to do, and you can save yourself up to $1,000 per year by making it all yourself!

Here is one of our most popular recipes, Homemade All-Purpose Cleaner.  You can use any type of essential oil you like, but I am particularly fond of Eucalyptus Oil as it really makes your home smell amazing, and is a natural deterrent to ants (#winning). You can use it on any surface around the home.  White vinegar is also great at keeping away mould spores from growing in the bathroom!

Here’s how to make Homemade All-Purpose Cleaner:

  • 2 cups hot water (not boiling)
  • 1 tablespoon dishwashing liquid
  • 1/2 cup white vinegar
  • 10 drops of Eucalyptus Oil

Pour the hot water into a spray bottle. Add the dishwashing liquid and the vinegar.  Replace the lid and gently mix the ingredients together by tipping the bottle upside down a few times.  Remove the lid and pop in any essential oil of your choice.

Store the spray bottle in a dark cupboard in between uses.

Natural Lemon Home Made All-Purpose Cleaner:

This is another recipe that doesn’t use dishwashing liquid.

  • Lemon skins (four to five lemons would be good)
  • 2 cups white vinegar
  • Large glass jar that will hold 2 cups

Pop the lemon peels into the glass jar.  Pour in the white vinegar (fill it right to the top of the jar).  Seal the jar.  Allow the mixture to steep in a dark area for two-three weeks.  Remove the lid and pour 1 cup of liquid into a spray bottle and fill the rest of the bottle with warm water.  Use anywhere in the home!

Store the unused lemon liquid in a jar in a dark area.

You can use the rinds of any citrus.  The orange one is particularly beautiful to use around the house!

How to Use Homemade All-Purpose Cleaner:

Our homemade all-purpose cleaner can be used like any spray and wipe type product.  It is also fabulous in the laundry (this can be used as a stain remover) and if you have oil spill in the driveway – give this cleaner a go!

Good Alternatives to Eucalyptus Oil:

  • Lemon Oil
  • Tea Tree Oil
  • Clove Oil (Clove Oil is VERY strong – only use this for the bathroom as it has fantastic mould-killing properties)
  • Lavender Oil
  • Peppermint Oil (Peppermint Oil is also really great at deterring ants in the kitchen).

How to Make Homemade All-Purpose Cleaner Tips

  • Thoroughly rub the surface that you are cleaning.
When it comes to cleaning, friction is an essential component. It facilitates the removal of grime, filth, germs, and bacteria by the multi-purpose cleaner. Microfiber cloths enhance the scrubbing power of a cleaning solution.
  • Be careful not to oversaturate the surfaces.
Water is a wonderful cleaning agent; yet, if used in excessive amounts, it may cause harm to the surfaces of a home. To begin, use just a little amount of the cleaning solution, and then add more if necessary.
  • Leave the glass behind.
In many cases, all-purpose cleaners and multi-purpose cleaners are sold as if they were wonder products that could clean everything. On the other hand, I do not use a cleaner that is meant for all surfaces on highly reflecting surfaces like windows or mirrors
