5 Easy Ways To An Organised Wardrobe

I’ve been there. I’ve stared aimlessly into my wardrobe, wondering what to wear today.

Knowing I couldn’t be bothered to iron, that my favourite dress (and the underwear that goes with it!) is in the wash, and that I really shouldn’t wear white when I will be spending the day at the park with my son!

I am sure you’ve heard of the 80/20 rule. It can be applied in many situations, but when you think about it in relation to your wardrobe it looks like this:

You wear 20% of the clothes in your wardrobe 80% of the time

Just think about that for a while. Go to your wardrobe and have a look inside.  Can you see all the money you’ve spent on clothing, only to be wearing 20% of it? Scary isn’t it?

What about these statistics? Do they make you quake in your boots?

  • The average woman has seven pairs of jeans but wears only four.
  • The average woman has ten items of clothing in her wardrobe that don’t fit and cost $500.
  • 60% of women bought an item on impulse in the last year, with 90% of these bought on sale.
  • 53% of women have shopped to celebrate good news; 61% have shopped when in a bad mood to make themselves feel better.

If all of these statistics haven’t been enough to shock you, this one certainly will:

In the 1930s, the average woman had nine complete outfits. Today, most women have over 60 complete outfits in their wardrobe!

Really?

Yep, really.

It may not seem like it but I guarantee that if you take a good look in your wardrobe, you will be able to mix and match so many shirts, skirts, pants and shoes that you have a serious amount of complete outfits in there!

Regardless of whether you have 60 complete outfits or not, the key to getting out of the house on time is to have an organised wardrobe.

There are a number of different ways you can organise your wardrobe. This depends on your organising style, your current lifestyle and personality and, of course, your ability to be honest with yourself in regards to where you are right now in your life.

These are five easy ways to an organised wardrobe. Do they sound familiar or do you follow a different method?

  1. All in together This is where you have no particular organisation system at all. Shirts, shoes and scarves are all just thrown into the space, onto the floor and on the shelves.
  2. Form/Type This is where your clothes are organised by the type of garment. So, all of your shirts will be hanging together, all of your trousers together, dresses together, skirts together, jeans together, etc.
  3. Function This is where your clothes are organised according to their function and purpose. In this instance, you may have all of your work clothes together, all of your casual clothes together, your formal/special event clothes together, etc.
  4. Colour This is where your clothes are organised according to colour; so, all of your clothes regardless of type will be hung together (all red in one location, all white, all blue, etc.)
  5. By outfit This is where you hang your clothes as a complete outfit accessories, shoes, blouse, skirt, belt, everything you need to create your look is hung together.

If you know your wardrobe could do with an overhaul, why not choose one of these methods and get to it?  You may be amazed at how many clothes you find that you had completely forgotten about!

I also guarantee that if you get your wardrobe organised, you will have more time in the morning to get everyone else organised and out the door on time looking great it’s a win-win really!
