4 Ways to Keep Kids Busy When Attending an Appointment

Have a hair, nail, doctor, dentist appointment and can’t find someone to watch the kids?

It happens to the best of us and in some circumstances, you may not have another option but to bring the little one along with you. So, how can you ensure that your little guy behaves and you are not left embarrassed and with only half of your head highlighted?

There is more to it than just making sure he is fed and well rested. Below are some of our tried and tested tips to keep kids busy when attending an appointment!

1. Bring Entertainment

A good option when you are attending an appointment is to bring any smart phone or tablet. You can set them up in the corner and let your child sit down and watch his favourite movie while you meet with your doctor or get your brows waxed. If your child loves television, then this might be suitable for you. If you don’t want your child becoming dependant on television, then bring colouring in books, puzzles and small games to keep him occupied. Mind you, we don’t judge, (hands my kid an iPad to keep writing), a mummy’s gotta do what a mummy’s gotta do.

2. Phone Ahead

Many hairdressers and beauticians are not child-friendly but most will not deny you if you do have your child with you on occasion. Phone ahead and ask them. If they are completely against children, then you might want to look for a more child-friendly salon that is a little more understanding and flexible.

Most salon owners will appreciate the warning that you are bringing a little one with you. They may even be prepared with a special treat or toy just for him.

3. Give in to the Bribe

You don’t want to leave the nail salon with a toddler on a sugar rush but often gummies, teddies and other special lollies will work to keep your child quiet during an appointment.4 Ways to Keep Kids Busy When Attending an Appointment | Stay At Home Mum

You can find healthy options at your local health food store, such as VegeBuddies, an excellent alternative to Gummy Bears that are jam packed with soy, veggies and vitamins, not sugar.

4. Explain To Your Child What is Happening

Seeing Mummy with a head full of foils or watching Mummy wince in pain at the dentist’s office will probably upset your child. Start telling him a day or two in advance what will happen at the appointment and how you want him to behave. That way, he will be ready to sit down and watch Mummy without feeling scared or feeling overwhelmed and excited about the new environment.4 Ways to Keep Kids Busy When Attending an Appointment | Stay At Home Mum

Not all mums have the luxury of having a relative, a nanny or even a daycare that they can use whenever they need a break or have an appointment. And thus, you may find that you are carting your little ones along with you during these important errands. The good news is that the more they do it, the more they will get used to it. The bad news, however, is that, as you already are well aware, children are unpredictable and one good appointment doesn’t guarantee success every time. Keep in mind that all children have a limit and the best way to ensure a successful appointment is to be prepared.
