I’ve done a lot of traveling in my day; however, since having kids, I will admit that the last minute trips down the coast, the overseas adventures and the island getaways have been few and far between. Why? Well, money is definitely a factor but also stress. Traveling with kids is a huge adventure and while it can be great to escape as a family, it also requires a lot of planning, patience and must have travel accessories.
Recently hubby and I took advantage of the school holidays and headed to an exclusive family friendly island resort for a few days of cocktails by the pool, snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef and sand castle making on the beach. The trip was amazing in every sense of the word but one of the reasons was because we were prepared, thanks to the Telstra Pre-Paid Wi-Fi 4G. So, this got me thinking, what’s the one thing you never leave behind when going away on holidays? Here are my top three must have travel accessories:
Yes, I know, family time shouldn’t be about updating your status on Facebook and checking the news, but, let’s face it, we all love showing off the lovely holiday sunsets. We took this trip to test drive the new Telstra Pe-Paid Wi-Fi 4G which provides fast, reliable internet regardless of where you go (even to a remote island on the Great Barrier Reef). Let me tell you; the service over there was shocking but while my mobile didn’t work at all, the Telstra Pre-Paid Wi-Fi 4G picked up possibly the only signal out there. Luckily with the Telstra device I was actually able to connect without using my phone’s personal (and expensive) connection or resort to the hotel’s overpriced and faulty Wi-Fi.
And while I did use the device to check in to Facebook (naughty mummy), we also found it useful in so many other ways:
Navigation and Finding Cheap Parking – to avoid a fight before we even arrived at our destination I used the Telstra Pre-Paid Wi-Fi 4G device to connect the iPad to the net and do a quick search of hotel parking lots close to the docks. On the drive to the ferry terminal we discovered a hotel that offers $9 3-day parking (as opposed to $27 per day!) at the main terminal entrance. And it was only across the road! Score.
Checking the Weather – this is one of the many reasons we used the iPad to connect. However, with looming thunder storms on our second day, we needed some expert advice on whether to brave the water or not. We chose to and thankfully had a blast at the beach
Entertainment – the ride to the resort was not long but it was long enough for both my kids to start whinging that they were bored. With the Telstra Pre-Paid Wi-Fi 4G device we could easily find a connection so my kids could watch YouTube videos on the laptop during the wavy ride over. I also downloaded a movie on iTunes through the Wi-Fi connection to watch that night.
Skyping – Nana’s birthday fell on the same day that we arrived at the resort so I arranged a special Skype session from the balcony. The connection was faster than the coverage at my house. No cutting out; no lost connection; and no slow motion video.
Staying Connected to Home– we left our dog with the neighbour but of course the silly thing got into something (my guess is a bee) and her face swelled up. Our neighbour rang in a panic; I was able to quickly connect the Telstra Pre-Paid Wi-Fi 4G & find an emergency vet on a Sunday night.
Work – holidays are work-free zones but not for this WAHM and staying connected to my job is definitely why the Telstra Pre-Paid Wi-Fi 4G device makes my must have travel accessories list. I was easily able to connect and write this post while enjoying a beautiful ocean view and a lovely drink. Cheers!
2. First Aid/ Medical Kit
Even if you are only going away for a couple of days, its best to have a travel medical kit prepared to bring along with you. You can simply use a large zip lock bag to store your first aid and medical related items or invest in a portable kit that comes with the things you need including:
- Bandages, antiseptic cream, pressure bandages, gloves, syringes, scissors, saline solution
- Tampons and pads
- Sunscreen, after sun lotion, bug spray
- Children and adult painkiller medications, prescription medications
3. Prepared Snacks
Another one of my must have travel accessories when traveling with kids is an esky of snacks. I can guarantee that about fifteen minutes into any ride my kids will start with the “mum I’m hungry”. And sure enough, as soon as we sat down on the Fast Cat to our island, my son cried hunger. But rather than buy the four dollar bite sized bickies, I pulled out the esky. Some of my staples include:
- Dried fruit, sultanas, grapes, strawberries and kiwis
- Mini muffins, trail mix and snack cheese and crackers
- Frozen yoghurts (they will unfreeze after a few hours in the esky)
- Snack sized Teddies
- Cheese and vegemite sandwiches
Sure, it may mean you need to spend a little time preparing before you go but this can save you a fortune when in transit on any holiday. These are my top three must have travel accessories that I cannot leave the home without – what about you? What are your must have travel accessories (apart from the kids of course)?
