6 min read

Parents want to give their little ones the best start in life, and that really comes into effect when they start eating solid foods.

You’ve heard about what you shouldn’t be feeding babies, but do you know what should be in their diets?

Now, we aren’t here to give advice about when to start solid foods, because there really isn’t any cut and dry rules for that. These are just some suggestions about the kind of foods that you should try your baby on before they turn one.

Obviously, talk to your doctor or paediatrician before you introduce foods, and do some of your own research. If you have a history of allergies in your family or your child is at risk of allergies, always talk to your doctor before you start. Remember, as we grow to understand allergies more, recommendations of appropriate foods for babies are changing, so be informed but also keep an open mind.

Parents are often advised to keep their little ones away from fish in the first year of their lives. However, new research has suggested that low-mercury fish such as salmon can be introduced after 6 months of age, to the benefit of the child. Babies crave DHA, a kind of omega-3 fatty acid, as they grow, and salmon is full of it. Just mash it well, or puree it, ensuring no bones are present.

2. Spinach & Leafy Greens

It can be hard to get kids to like their greens, but that really does start in the early days of their eating habits. Persevere in offering babies spinach, chard and other leafy greens, even if they don’t like them at first. Leafy greens are some of the healthiest foods out there, and if you can make your kid like them, you’re definitely raising a healthy baby.
