Trimming Babies Nails is not an easy task but it is something that should be done. Your baby’s nails will grow and they will get long which means he could scratch himself in the face or in the eye. Babies do not have control over their flailing arms and thus it is important that you keep those nails nice and short to reduce the risk of scratches.

One of the biggest concerns when trimming a baby’s nails is that you will cut his fingertips. After all, they are oh so small and it can be easy to make a mistake, especially when they are moving all over the place. So here are five easy steps to get the job done right without tears:

  • Choose a time when your baby is calm or, even better, asleep. That way you can trim his nails without battling his flailing limbs as well. If you don’t want to risk waking him when he is asleep or if you baby is wrapped to sleep, then try after he has his bath when he is calm, relaxed and when the nails are the softest.
  • Choose a place that has a lot of light.  That way you can see what you are doing.
  • Choose the right equipment. There are specially designed baby scissors or clippers that will work best.
  • When you go to cut your baby’s nails, keep a firm grip on your baby’s hand. Press the finger pad away from the nail and cut the fingernails along the curve of the finger.
  • If you do happen to nick the fingertip it’s not the end of the world. Simply rinse the wound under cold water and place a tissue on the wound until the bleeding stops. There is no need to put a band aid on the injury.

The Biting Method

Many new parents will bite their baby’s nails rather than trim them. This can be an easier way to keep them trimmed but it can also invite germs and bacteria to your baby’s hands. However, it is up to you whether you want to opt for this method instead.

Trimming Toenails

You may find that you have to trim your new baby’s fingernails every week. However, toenails are not as big of a concern and tend to grow at a slower rate. When you are trimming your baby’s toenails cut straight rather than following the curve of the nail.

Preventing Scratching

If you find that your baby is still scratching her little face even if you are trimming her nails constantly then there are other options. Look into a pair of baby gloves for your baby which will prevent her from hurting herself. However, make sure you wash them often as you can expect the gloves to end up in her mouth often. When putting your new baby to sleep, consider using a swaddle or a sleeping bag or gro-bag which will contain her arms and prevent her from scratching in her sleep.
