Tips, Tricks and Ideas For Your Babymoon

There are some trends that we can really get behind, and others that pass us by. But having a babymoon absolutely resonates with all the mums here at SAHM.

The idea of taking a holiday with your partner just before your baby is due makes sense on all levels. It’s a chance for you and your partner to enjoy some time together before someone very demanding makes an appearance in your life. It’s a chance to take some time out of your busy life to enjoy your body as it is now, nourishing new life. It’s a chance to get away somewhere beautiful and remember what it is to be alive and carefree, before responsibility finds you again.

Why Take A Babymoon

If you’re not familiar with the concept of a babymoon, you might be wondering why it’s a good idea to take one. Many parents swear by the practice, and a growing number of experts are in the same boat. Essentially, a babymoon gives both mum and dad a chance to recharge and reconnect before their lives change forever. It can be a time to relax without the stressors of home, it can be a time to indulge in the special experience of pregnancy and being pampered, and it can be a time to ignite the flame of romance before breast milk and baby spew slow you down.

When To Take One

There’s an art to planning a babymoon. As well as all the other challenges that go into planning a holiday in general, you’ve got to remember you’re in a totally different situation. As a pregnant mum-to-be there’s a few things you need to think about, and timing is one of them.

You want to take your babymoon before you get too big, but not while you’re still in the throes of morning sickness. Ideally, your bump should be just showing, but you’re still active and able to swimsuit up and enjoy a wonderful holiday. Sometime in the second trimester is usually recommended, but it’s important to discuss with your doctor first. Certainly don’t wait too long, as many doctors discourage (and airlines ban) women of more than 36 weeks flying.

Where To Go

There are two schools of thought about the babymoon. One is that you should go somewhere tropical and gorgeous, wherever that happens to be in the world. The other is that you should go somewhere beautiful and relaxing”¦ and close to home. Obviously if there’s a problem with your pregnancy, the further away you are from a GP the more trouble you’ll have. This usually isn’t a big deal if you’re holidaying in a country with good medical availability and quality, but you might find it lacking in more remote destinations.

Some Babymoon Ideas

We aren’t going to recommend single destinations at the moment. Instead, we’re going to figure out what you want to get out of your babymoon, and suggest the activities that fit. Then, it will be easier for you to fill in the blanks on where you’ll be.

Into Indulgence

You’re about to undergo one of the most gruelling challenges of your life, so why not take the moment before that happens to make it all about you. If you’re looking to indulge on your babymoon set your sights on anywhere with an amazing spa service. We’re talking the whole nine yards, with lots of massage and all the skin pampering you can get your hands on. Remember to call and have a chat to the spa/hotel before you book to make sure they have packages that suit pregnant mummas. In particular, you want to avoid harsh skin treatments (like peels), and can’t have saunas. Many places that are popular among babymoon couples now offer special spa treatments just for mums-to-be, with specially trained staff to melt all your worries away.

Into Romance

A babymoon is the perfect opportunity to spend lots and lots of quality time with the special person in your life. Your partner will be the one you lean on during the challenging moments to come, so take a moment to enjoy just being the two of you together, for the last time. We’re talking long gentle walks on the beach, lots of floating around in the pool together, and a steady pattern of meals enjoyed in each other’s company. This really could happen anywhere, but if you want to make it really romantic keep an eye you for special couples packages. You can highjack a honeymoon package, or pick up on one of a growing number of mum-and-dad babymoon romance packages.

Into Relaxation

Just think for a moment how many opportunities you’ll have for carefree relaxation in the next few months, or years. With that in mind, it’s no surprise that relaxation is on your cards. Luckily, there’s no specific destination where relaxation is going to be better or worse. The key is to let yourself be overcome with the joy of nothing. Read a book by the pool, sleep in and have breakfast at lunchtime, or simply nap the day away. This is your time to enjoy time to yourself, with nothing interrupting you but the gentle breeze through the trees.
