The 2019 Flu Season in Australia has already claimed 68 lives….

This year is set to be the worst season in years with confirmed ‘flu cases tracking much higher this year compared to the same period last year.  In fact, doctors are predicting a ‘horror’ ‘flu season with the worse still to come.  If you haven’t already, right now is the time to get your ‘flu shot!

The Chief Medical Officer of South Australia, Paddy Phillips said:

“We have never seen influenza in these numbers at this time of the year.  Influenza is unfortunately everywhere in our community.  It’s in supermarkets, it’s in workplaces, it’s in schools, it’s in sporting clubs and it’s in nursing homes.”

The ‘flu shot can be given to children as young as six months old.  For adults (over 18 years) – you can get your ‘flu shot at most participating chemists.  For children 18 and under, you will need to have the ‘flu shot done at your local GP’s office.

How Much Does it Cost?

Well personally it cost me $20 to get my ‘flu shot at my local Doctor’s office.  But some people are eligible to get a free ‘flu shot.  The criteria includes:

  • Adults aged 65 and over
  • Adults and Children with certain medical conditions
  • All Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged six months and older.
  • Pregnant Women (during any stage of pregnancy).  This vaccination also offers some protection for your unborn baby.

Does the Needle Hurt?

Actually as scary as the needle looked, I seriously hardly felt it – and my two boys didn’t even bat an eyelid.  So no, it didn’t hurt.  I did have a bit of a ‘dead arm’ the next day – but a dead arm is much better than the ‘flu.

What Does the ‘Flu Feel Like?

I have only ever had the ‘flu one time.  And seriously, I never, ever, ever want to have it again.  I really thought I was dying (no exaggeration!).  I had a 40 degree temperature, my body felt like I’d been hit by a truck.  My head hurt so much I likened it to a migraine – and I felt sicker than I ever have felt in my whole life.  And it dragged on for two whole weeks.

I tell my boys that it was like I was hooked by millions of tiny fish hooks, and was being ‘pulled down’….

So a tiny needle is nothing!

Please get your ‘flu shot!
