Attention all maids of honour!
As chief bridesmaid, it is your duty to put together a hens (bachelorette) party that the bride will not forget!
The history of bachelor and bachelorette parties is really interesting. The tradition of a bachelor party actually goes back to ancient times, as far back as the 5th century B.C. It is believed that the ancient Spartans were the first to make a celebration out of the groom’s last night as a single man. Spartan soldiers held a dinner in their friend’s honour and made toasts on his behalf.
So, the tradition of men going out for their “last night of freedom” has been around for a long time, but what about the brides? Up until the late 19th century, women were thrown bridal showers, which were not a celebration as such, but a chance for the bride to acquire a dowry and receive gifts that would prepare them for marriage and looking after a household.
It was not until the sexual revolution of the 1960s that women’s decided that they needed their own pre-wedding festivities to rival that of the men. At first they were formal and sophisticated affairs, with women getting together for lunch and tea parties hosted by close friends and family. Then in the 1970s and 80s women stepped things up a notch and got a bit more wild!
Now women are having hen’s weekends away at exotic locations, raunchy parties with strippers and even shared celebrations with the buck’s party.
