At least 40 children from one school have been struck down by a gastro bug yesterday.

Two of those students have been taken to hospital as doctors warn that the strain is highly contagious and is quickly spreading in Brisbane’s Northside area.

Year seven student Bailey Vella couldn’t stop vomiting since 1.30am on Thursday morning.

“I just instantly called the home doctor “¦ the doctor said he had three other families in the street he was seeing,” his mum Natalie said.

Bailey, a St Pius Catholic Primary school student, is just one of the 40 children infected with the gastro bug, along with the year two class.

The students’ classroom has now been closed for cleaning.

The outbreak was said to have started spreading 10 days ago. “At our clinic we must’ve seen somewhere between 50 to 100 cases I’m aware of,” Dr Richard Kidd said, adding that one of their doctors even ended up in hospital.

“This is a strain that somehow must be quite new, everyone’s getting it,” he said.

Doctors say the youngest infected patient was a one-year-old and the oldest, a 96-year-old.

Test results are due back today to determine the type of strain that is so quickly spreading through the community.
