Boy Abandoned On Metro Train Platform

A seven-year-old boy has been left alone in a train station after the train’s carriage doors closed as he tried to wheel his bike on to the carriage.

Parents Andy and Gen Ashton, along with two children, including their son, Zari, and a family friend were on their way home from a bike ride in Melbourne on Friday afternoon when the incident took place.

The family boarded the train at Newport station and Zari was the last of his family to board the train. He was trying to wheel his bike on to the carriage when suddenly, the doors closed and he was left alone on the platform. He attempted to chase the train down, screaming and dropping his bike.

The concerning moment was recorded on video which 7News obtained.

Seeing Zari, his distressed family and other passengers desperately pressed on the emergency intercom buttons to make the driver stop the train. When nothing happens, Andy called Triple-0. His conversation with the operator went:

“We’ve just got on a train and left our son at the station at Newport, he missed the doors closing, we’re hoping someone can look after him until we get back there,” Andy told the operator.

The operator responds: “Did he look ok? Was he distressed?”

Andy replies: “Yeah very distressed.”

After around 10 minutes, the Ashtons got off at the next station, Spotswood, and rode back to rescue Zari, who cried when he saw his dad.

Andy told 7 News he doesn’t want another family to go though the same traumatic experience.

“I remember looking out from the train and seeing his face through the window of the train. It was a really scary feeling seeing your son looking terrified and not being able to help them at all. It was probably the worst moment of my parenting life and seeing my partner looking very upset,” he said.

Now, Zari’s parents are furious that Metro has done nothing to stop it from happening again. “It’s not unusual things to have sun glare or be unsighted that’s a common occurrence. I think what’s unusual is the person they left behind was wearing a high-vis vest and bright yellow hair,” Andy said.

After the investigation, Metro advised large groups travelling with children or bicycles to board as close as possible to the front of the train so the driver can see them.
