Study: 1 in 33 Australian Kids Are Under Care Of Child Protection Services

A new study has revealed alarming data stating that 1 in every 33 Australian kids are under the care of child protection services.

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) has released its new study stating that over 162,000 children below 18 have received protection in the past financial year, but that number continues to rise.

In the AIHW report, released on Thursday, added that with nearly three-quarters of all kids repeat clients, the total number of children that need protection increased by 10,000 each year for the past three years.

The study also stated that the majority of children who were mostly affected were Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander. It added that that they were seven times more likely as non-indigenous children to receive protection. While, children from remote areas are four times more likely than those in major cities.

Emotional abuse and neglect were found to be amongst the most common types of substantiated abuse and neglect.

In the study, kids who received child protection services were either the subject of an investigation, on a ‘care and protection’ order, and/or in out-of-home care, and around 60 per cent of children were the subject of an investigation only.

However, 24 per cent were on both an order and in out-of-home care, while nine per cent were involved in all three components of the system, the AIHW said.
