Teenager Holds Grandmother Hostage In Gold Coast Siege

2 min read

Police are interviewing a 17-year-old girl in relation to a Gold Coast siege at Southport overnight that resulted in a number of streets being closed.

The girl was allegedly armed with a knife and took a hostage.

Around 9:30 last night police were alerted to the situation on Cotlew Street in Southport. The teenager was armed with a knife and had barricaded herself inside the house where she was also holding her 61-year-old grandmother as a hostage.

Police officers made it clear that certain streets, including Myall, Coolibah, Loweana, Cotlew and Lavinia streets, should be avoided by the public. They declared an emergency, and started negotiations with the teenager to resolve the situation.

According to police, specialists were able to enter the home and the girl was eventually detained at around 4am. By 4:50am, police had declared that the siege had been resolved, notably “without incident”, and that the girl behind it was in custody.

Todd Reid, a police inspector, spoke to the media not long after the girl was arrested:

“There was a 17-year-old female armed with a knife who was holding her grandmother hostage in that residence,” he said.

“That’s been going on for about the last eight hours and it’s just successfully resolved with that female now in custody with police and her grandmother safe and well with some minor injuries.”

Currently there isn’t any information as to what might have motivated the siege, but the investigation continues.
