The 8 Best Sausage Roll Recipes to Make at Home

Ahhhhh sausage roll recipes are the best! They’re probably my biggest weakness!

At school on the days I could have tuck shop, I would buy myself one l and a custard tart.

Every time. Nothing beats the delicious pastry wrapped in spicy delectable meat. Yes, you can buy them at the supermarket, and they are okay (just okay) – but nothing beats a homemade version.

And these are the BEST recipes around – very tried and true!

1. Homemade (the Original and the BEST!)

These are a basic plain sausage roll recipe, but they are so easy and very delicious. The best thing about this recipe is that you can make them in bulk and freeze them, so you always have beautifully made homemade them on hand whenever you need them! My boys eat a load of these over the school holidays and I do sneak in an odd vegetable or two!

2. Pork and Apple Sausage Rolls

The kids will wolf these down and beg you for more! They are really inexpensive to make, and the apple gives the sausage rolls a really lovely sweetness that even the grownups will love. If you are only making these for the kids, substitute the mustard seeds for mustard powder instead – or just leave it out.

3. Lamb and Rosemary Sausage Rolls

Lamb and rosemary are a match made in heaven (and rosemary is not only a delicious herb, it is also a beautiful plant that is easy to grow and doesn’t need a whole lot of water – plant some, you won’t regret it!). Lamb mince isn’t always readily available in the rural areas, but you may find in your local Woolworth’s or ask your butcher.

4. Chicken and Vegetable Sausage Rolls

Chicken mince is so versatile, and it is much healthier for you. I love how the chicken mince always seems to absorb the flavours you cook it with. This is just a chicken version of the plain sausage roll recipe, with some important vegetables that kids need hiding within. Add a bit of curry powder or chilli if you are making it for grownups and want them to have a bit of a kick!

6. Sausage in Pastry (or Cheaters Sausage Rolls)

I grew up eating these; they are really a cheater’s version of a sausage roll. But they are just as delicious – and really, really easy for a weeknight dinner when the time is tight. Best of all, these are amazing cold the next day!

A juicy spinach ricotta filling encased with buttery, flaky pastry. Great finger food or to pop into lunch boxes, though they are definitely best served warm!
