Cut the top off of the watermelon and scoop out the flesh, being careful not to damage the rind. Mix the green food colouring with water and pour it into the watermelon. then, place the watermelon in the fridge overnight. The next day, cut a hole in the bottom of the watermelon and place it over the container.

Turn the watermelon upside down and watch as the green slime pours out! For an extra touch of horror, add some spiderweb decorations around the container. This gruesome recipe is sure to be a hit at your Halloween party.

And the great thing about this recipe is that it isn’t just for Halloween, it would be great for a kids’ birthday party or even just a fancy way to serve a fruit platter!

Step 1:  Shop for Your Fruit

When I visited Woolworths, they only had cut watermelon wedges on the fruit and vegetable floor, however just ask, because the staff are only too happy to go back into the store room to grab a whole watermelon.  Try and grab a longer melon rather than a round – it makes the end result look cuter! I specifically asked for a ‘Pretty Watermelon’ and they were only too happy to oblige!

The fruit that I used in my version included:

  • Watermelon
  • Rockmelon
  • Pineapple
  • Blueberries
  • White Grapes
  • Red Grapes

But seriously – you can use any fruit in season!

Step 2: Cut the Very Bottom Of the Watermelon

Now large watermelons can be a bit tricky to handle – so if you cut the ‘bum’ off the bottom of the watermelon, and then place it on the cut side down, it will give you stability.

Especially seeing you are about to use a sharp knife to cut the shapes out in the next step!

Step 3: Use a Marker to Mark Your Scary Watermelon Face

Grab a whiteboard marker or permanent marker and draw on some eyes (I just did basic triangles for the eyes) – then with the mouth – you want it wide and open so you can see inside!

Step 4: Cut Up All Your Fruit

You don’t even need to cut up the fruit in a similar fashion – just make them bite-sized!

Step 5: Scoop Out the Watermelon Flesh

But don’t throw it away! I used an ice cream scoop to pull all the flesh out of the watermelon!

Step 5: Assemble the Vomit

Then mix the fruit up and place both in the Watermelon’s mouth, and just outside in an epic Rainbow Yawn! There, a vomiting watermelon! We used a variety of the fantastic range of Halloween items from Woolworths to decorate the table to make it really scary!
