10 Amazing Pies to Make This Winter

10 Amazing Pies to Make This Winter

I love winter for the food — rich, heavy gravies, pastries, casseroles — they just fill the spot!

Most are really easy and there is a variety of both savoury and sweet pies to enjoy! Make or buy your pastry depending on your time – most pastries or even pre-made.

Tart shells can be bought and stored in the freezer so a pie is always easy to make at any time!

Here is a list of 10 amazing pies to make this winter.

1. Bacon and Egg Pie

Probably one of my most favourite pies, this is my mum’s recipe – and I make it A LOT!!! I make it in a baking dish rather than a pie dish (the piccie is one made in a pie dish) – as it goes further – and then you can eat it cold the next day! Scrumptious!

2. Old Fashioned Apple Pie

Now don’t be alarmed by the amount of ingredients in this recipe, but in saying that – it does take time – and this is one recipe that I highly recommend making the pastry from scratch. The pastry is very ‘short’ – which means it is very buttery and shortbread like. It does make it fiddly, but it is so darn good I like eating the pastry raw… Just use pie apples for ease!

3. Pink Pie

Never heard of ‘Pink Pie’? Sounds a bit rude huh!  Well, think about this – layers of corned beef, topped with white sauce, smothered in mashed potato and popped in a pie! Very rich and decadent! Perfect for using leftover corned beef or silverside.

4. Old Fashioned Caramel Tart

Not the condensed milk type, this is the old fashioned, made-from-scratch caramel – which is actually pretty darn easy to make. It isn’t as ‘heavy’ as a condensed milk caramel. And adding some passionfruit pulp on top will really bring out the flavours… delish!

P.S: I know this is a tart, not a pie, but meh!!! It is in a pie dish so I’m going to count it in!

5. Condensed Milk Tart

I learned this recipe from my mother-in-law – and couldn’t believe it would work without gelatin in it – but it did – and it is amazing! The biggest hint is to use Meyer Lemons or other lemons from the shop – not bush lemons. For some reason, bush lemons won’t set this pie!

6. Coconut Impossible Pie

I love this recipe – you just literally chuck all the ingredients into a pie dish – and bake! It is ‘impossible’ because it forms a base, a delicious filling, and a crusty top!

7. Lemon Meringue Pie

It might be old fashioned, but it is still a damn delicious pie!

8. Chicken Pot Pie

Chicken Pot Pie is a great way to cram loads of vegetables into a delicious pie with lots of chicken and a cheesy sauce.

I only ever put pastry on top, which makes it nice and easy for an everyday dinner for the family!

9. Beef and Guinness Pie

Guinness might not be your taste, but when cooked for a very long time with tender beef chunks, it thickens into a delicious gravy that is just superb on a cold winter’s night.
