There’s nothing hard about making a Traditional Potato Gratin, but the meal is absolutely comforting and a favourite of both adults and children! Make it as simple or complex as you like, by adding extra herbs and spices, or mixing it up with non-traditional additions like other vegetables. For a non-vegetarian option you could easily add some bacon bits to this casserole, it’s really up to you!

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 160 degrees and lightly grease a casserole dish of around 2L in capacity. You can do this with butter or a cooking spray.

  2. Cut potatoes thinly into slices, and set aside. Mix all the cheeses in a single bowl. Grate or mince the garlic. You're now ready to assemble.

  3. Arrange the potato over the base of the dish, overlapping slightly, in a single layer. Spread some cream on the top, and then a quarter of the cheeses along with salt, pepper and garlic. Repeat to make 2-3 more layers, finishing with a layer of grated cheese.

  4. Bake in the preheated oven for 1.5+ hours or until the top of the gratin is golden and the potato is tender. Allow to sit for 10 minutes before serving.
