My Mum is extremely sensitive to dairy and has been buying the Liddells Lactose free milk for years and years. However her passion in life (as is mine) is CHEESE and she has had to go without. So she recently picked up a small pack of lactose free cheese and I was interested to try it as my hubby is also very sensitive to dairy.
As I am a tad anal about my cheese, (ie cheese snob!) I bought some myself to try and this is what I thought:
I find all dairy free / lactose free cheeses are usually a tad rubbery. This one is slightly rubbery – certainly not as bad as I expected it to be. It has the texture of Havarati cheese. Rubber factor would be 2.3/5 – so pretty good for a lactose free version.
It is lovely and creamy but certainly not strong on taste. A very mild cheddar but still has that creaminess. My kids enjoyed it on taco’s and I had it in a sandwich and could still taste it (only just).
Where Can I Get it and How Much:
I purchased this in Woolworths in Gympie (which means the whole of Australia should have it already) and it was $4.99 for a 250 gram block.
For cheese lovers that aren’t dairy intolerant this would certainly be a disappointment. However as far as lactose free cheeses go, this is a great substitute for the real thing. It tastes a whole lot better than soy cheese (blahhhh) and is gentle on the stomach. Certainly one of the best lactose free cheeses on the market at the moment.
