Study: Red Wine Can Help Women Get Pregnant

A new study has revealed that red wine may help a woman get pregnant.

Now, this adds to a number of reasons why there is a need to reach for that glass of red wine.

There are already links that suggest red wine might help you lose weight, may help you to you live longer, and that one glass of red is like one hour in the gym, but now a glass of red wine a day could actually help a woman fall pregnant.

In a new study published in the Endocrine Society’s Journal of Clinical Endrocrinology & Metabolism, there’s a natural compound in red wine called resveratrol that has been found to significantly reduce the chances of women developing Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), a leading cause of infertility among women.

The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners explained that PCOS is a condition present in 12 to 21 percent of women of reproductive age, but up to 70 percent of these women are not diagnosed.

PCOS causes women to produce a higher amount of testosterone and androgen. However, resveratrol has now been found to drastically lower a woman’s testosterone level.

Professor Antoni Duleba who led the study said that this is the first of its kind.

“Our study is the first clinical trial to find resveratrol significantly lowers PCOS patients’ levels of testosterone as well as dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS), another hormone that the body can convert into testosterone.

“This nutritional supplement can help moderate the hormone imbalance that is one of the central features of PCOS,” Prof Duleba said.

The study involved 30 women with PCOS who were randomly divided and were either given a resveratrol supplement or placebo pills to take for three months. It found that testosterone levels of those taking resveratrol dropped by a massive 23.1 percent, while those taking the placebo increased by 2.9 percent.

Resveratrol can also be found in nuts and grapes.

So for red wine-loving mummas out there, cheers!
