The scorching hot weather has finally arrived!
But you aren’t planning to sit around in an air-conditioned room all day, are you?
As much as I love summer more anything else, there are days when the heat becomes too much to handle. Sometimes it is just draining! Fortunately though, we found several ways — simple and not financially threatening — to manage the heat.
Here’s how to keep cool without spending a fortune!
1. Close indoor blinds and doors before it gets too hot.
2. Pop some whirlybird vents on the roof..
They don’t really cost much when bought.
3. Seal the doors to keep out heat.
4. Clean your air-conditioning filter regularly.
So it doesn’t have to work as hard when the weather is too hot.
5. Run your air-con at half speed.
This prevents the air-conditioner to work too hard and it is also cost efficient.
6. Pop up blankets over the windows for extra darkness.
7. Place ice blocks/cubes into portable air coolers.
8. Freeze water and drink from that as it slowly melts.
9. If you live in a two storey house, stay downstairs.
Hot air rises so it is bound to be hotter upstairs.
10. Freeze a face washer and place it on the back of your neck and feet
11. If you have outside blinds, pull them down as well.
12. Avoid using lights when not needed as it generates heat inside the house.
13. If you have a brick house, spray it at night with water.
Spraying the house as well as concrete paths around your house will help release all the heat.
14. Use slow cookers to cook rather than ovens/stoves – or better still, the barbecue!
15. Turn off your appliances when unused as it also generates heat.
16. In the morning, when the wind is still cool, open your blinds, drapes and windows.
17. You can also opt to open your windows at night when it is colder.
18. Plant around your air-conditioning unit outside to give it shade.
This will help the unit operate more efficiently.
19. Wear loose-fitting clothing in light colours.
20. Fill a spray bottle with water and keep it in the refrigerator.
Spray on your face after going outdoors. You can also pour a glass of water on your face or better yet — do the ice bucket challenge! Totes fun!
21. Fans can help circulate air and make you feel cooler even in an air-conditioned house.
22. Take frequent baths or showers with cool or tepid water.
23. If you’re wearing a cap or hat, remove it and pour a bit of ice cold water into the hat, then quickly invert it and place on your head.
This will help to keep your neck cool and relatively free of sweat.
25. Wear a bandanna with water soaked on it and put it on your head.
Or you can relive the 80’s and wear a wet terrycloth headband on your forehead.
26. Running cold water over your wrists for 10 seconds each hand will reduce your temperature for roughly an hour.
It takes 20 seconds to do and feels very nice if your wrists come in contact with other body parts.
27. Kids’ wading pools are great for adults’ feet too,
Don’t forget to keep your eye on the kids!
28. If you have a gas stove with pilot lights, make sure they are set correctly.
If they are set too high, they will produce excess heat
