10 Best True Crime Podcasts to Listen to In 2023

I have an unhealthy fascination with all things morbid and gruesome.

True crime podcasts hit just the right spot for me. They are as morbid as they can get, but the gruesome factor is toned down with the fact that it really happened — these are true crimes, after all. I feel sympathy for the victims; there’s no denying that these podcasts are indeed very sobering.

And okay I’ll be totally honest and say that I find these really really entertaining.

If you’re interested in knowing what these true crime podcasts are, I listed down all my favourites! Enjoy!

1. Sword and Scale

  • Host: Mike Boudet
  • Country of Origin: USA

Sword and Scale is for hard core true crime fanatics! Hosted by the controversial Mike Boudet (whose voice is just so hypnotic), Sword and Scale covers murders of all notoriety and includes witness statement, real 911 calls and interviews with the criminals themselves.

Now old Mike Boudet has copped lots of flack in the past for his views on, well just about everything. And I don’t agree with all he spouts – but his podcast is just awesome.

And yes I have a paid subscription – and yes it’s worth every cent.

Most popular episodes:

  • Luka Magnotta (Episodes 33 and 34)
  • Ricardo Lopez (Episode 66)
  • Johnny Gosch (Episode 5 & 6)
  • Ronald William Brown (Episode 20)

2. Casefile True Crime

  • Host: Anonymous Host
  • Country of Origin: Australia

Casefile is an Australian-based True Crime Podcast that airs weekly.  The podcast deals with solved or cold criminal cases and covers both well-known murders and serial crimes.

Casefile is always in the top 10 of every True Crime Podcast list you will read – for a good reason!

Most talked about episodes:

The East Area Rapist (Case 53)

This 5-part episode explores what happened in Rancho Cordova, East Sacramento from 1976 – 1979. Women got hang-up phone calls, heavy breathing calls, strange break-ins where nothing was stolen, violent threats… all the work of the evasive serial rapist.

3. Cold Case Files

  • Host: Brooke Gittings
  • Country of Origin: United States

Cold Case File is a podcast about murders that have been previously unsolved, until that little bit of information comes through that leads to an arrest.

Most talked about episode from this best true crime podcasts: Sweethearts, Silenced (Episode 4)

29 years after the murder of two teenagers, Tim Hack and Kelly Drew, in August 1980, the police comes across a book that could become the key to solving this crime as well as three other murders. Could the author be the Zodiac Killer himself?

4. Red Handed

  • Hosts: Hannah and Suruthi
  • Country of Origin: United Kingdom

Pommy duo Hannah and Suruthi are hilariously funny, morbid as hell and right on the money when it comes to True Crime Podcasting. I’m usually not a fan of podcasts that have hosts that natter about the case, but these two are hands down the best podcast duo out there – this is one of my favourites!

Best Episode:  Episode 109: Andrea Yates & The Devil

5. The Minds of Madness

  • Hosts: Tyler
  • Country of Origin: Canada

A Canadian podcast that talks about ordinary people who do unthinkable things.

Most talked about episode from this best true crime podcasts: Jennifer Long (Episode 20)

Jennifer Long was 16 when she suddenly disappeared in January 1998. She was last seen at her high school in Kansas City, Missouri, where she skipped classes. She met a local handyman, got into his car, and has never been heard from again.

6. Morbid: A True Crime Podcast

  • Host: Alaina & Ash
  • Country of Origin: United States

The fascinating thing about the hosts of Morbid: A True Crime Podcast is that host Alaina is an autopsy technician and frequently talks about her job (when it applies) during the podcasts.

Now these girls can get a tad overly chatty about non-True Crime related stuff, but you get to know more about them and they are terribly likeable.

Best Episodes:

  • JonBenet Ramsey Part 1 & 2
  • Katherine Knight (Episode 18)
  • Edmund Kemper “The Coed Killer” (Episode 2)

7. Canadian True Crime

  • Host: Kristi Lee
  • Country of Origin: Canada (But the host is an ex-Australian)

Most talked about episode from this best true crime podcasts:  Robert Pickton (Episode 15)

Canada’s most prolific serial killer was a pig farmer who lived in a suburb of Vancouver. For over 20 years, he lured vulnerable women and prostitutes into his farm, which became Canada’s biggest murder grounds. But how did he get away with it for so long?

8. Moms and Murder

  • Host: Mandy and Melissa
  • Country of Origin: The United States

Now this is one very under-rated True Crime Podcast – and I love the depth the girls go into for each case – and best of all – they leave the ‘nattering’ to the end – so you only listen if you want to (but they are hysterical).

Most talked about episode: Kelley Clayton (Episode 10)

35-year old Kelley Clayton was found brutally murdered inside her own home in September 2015. The mother of two is said to have been beaten to death with a fibreglass maul handle, resulting to a bloody crime scene. However, there were no signs of forced entry.

9. Big Mad True Crime

  • Host: Ashley Flowers
  • Country of Origin: United States

Now this isn’t the BEST researched true crime podcast in the world – and Ashley Flowers has a somewhat dirty history – but if you just want to hear about true crime without all the bullshit – this is a pretty good one to listen to.

10. Real Crime Profile

  • Hosts: Laura Richards, Jim Clemente & Lisa Zambette
  • Country of Origin: United States

Now this is a True Crime Podcast with cred. Jim Clemente is a retired FBI agent, Laura Richards is an ex-Scotland Yard prosecutor and Lisa Zambette is a casting director on Criminal Minds.

The three go through crimes step by step and I’ll tell you what – their views can really change your mind on a crime.
