Engagement
Answered 4 years ago
My 22 year old son asked me to borrow $2k to buy his 22 year old partner an engagement ring
I am happy to give it as a gift
My concern is they never lived together and want to live together after getting married next year
Hubby is teasing him for living in fantasy land and don’t know how to convince my son to live with his partner of 6 years

My hubby and I got engaged young and married young. Before we lived together. No one thought it would work. 12 years later and we are still so happy. No advice on the others just want to show you it can and does work. When you know, you know.

Don't tease. Don't push your ideas onto him.
Back off & be supportive and helpful. Take it from someone who's got in laws who tried (and still do) to interfere & push (bully) us 'helpfully' in the 'right' direction - it won't end well for you. I distance from IL's as much as possible because of it (mine are extreme, though).
And gift/lend the money but ffs don't attach strings to it. Again, you'll lose them.

You can’t. It’s his choice as a grown up. It might be totally the wrong decision, but still his. The only thing you need to worry about is if you give him the $2k, lend it to him or not give it to him at all.
