A formal observation of our lessons as a teacher where we are marked against the standards during this global crisis? Same for anyone else?

My school headmaster will be doing a formal observation of our online classes and marking us against teaching standards. I think this is disgraceful. I think it’s absolutely fine to just appear in an online class to observe but to use this as feedback for end of year appraisals at a time like this is shocking. As a parent and teacher, I am overwhelmed by the quadrupled workload for myself and for my two children who both have learning difficulties. I feel like putting such pressure on during this crisis is insensitive and causing already heightened stress. Is anyone else having formal observations ?

I definitely think observing you and giving you feedback about how you are managing and adapting to teaching online is great. The headmaster May have also witnessed some amazing lessons and be able to put all of these observations together and share them with staff as good practise for virtual classes.

What I don’t think is ok is observing for your review. This could affect the staff morale, especially if you meet standards in all areas and now you are suddenly satisfactory because it’s a new type of learning that you are adapting too, especially if you are freaked by out by technology. Though it could also be that you will have an amazing observation and you will share good practise. Hopefully your school will be sensitive to the situation as a whole.

Fair, no. But it's happening to everyone, everywhere. Teachers are not unique here. I know my husband has the same issue.

The teacher evaluation affects parents too. My child's teacher is asking for proof of ridiculous amounts of work (up to 6 hours daily, lower primary) so they can prove to the principal they're doing their job. I've not had ANY feedback on my child's work all term, even though we're told to submit for marking and feedback.

That’s insane to expect that! I am a primary teacher and there is no way I would expect that from a child. I teach core subjects English maths science and history/geography. My lessons are about 20-30mins of teaching and engaging with my class and I give them an activity which would take between 15-30mins to practise or consolidate those skills

I believe it’s a brilliant idea to see how teachers react, plan, implement and behave during this trying time.

I think it's good to gather that kind of information for future teaching reference, I don't think it's fair to judge individual teachers for their online teaching methods when they haven't received proper training.

I'm a bit stupid, can you say that again in layman terms? Please

Principal is going to check/watch the lessons and mark the teachers on how they’re doing. These marks count as their end of year review. Something like this?

Teachers are stressed too and it’s not a natural learning environment so not the best situation to judge as everyone is trying their best

Oh OK. The whole thing was a giant mess. Parents aren't qualified to educate their children in this manner and most of these teachers are not trained to deliver their lessons online. Messy and unfair

So he is going to assess you doing your job and provide you feedback? I don’t believe there is anything wrong with this at all. It is not his fault that you have personal problems. Perhaps given your workload you should go part time to manage it all or do you have a partner, the father of the kids to help you? This isn’t a HR issue maybe there have been complaints?

That's terrible. Is it just your school?

Sounds terrible. You are not an online teacher. You are a teacher and the headmaster should be more compassionate to the strains that this is causing. She probably thinks it is not a big deal, but it is because of everything going on. When are your classes heading back?

Personally, I think you should phone up your HR department if there is one, or atleast raise your feelings with her.

I’m not a teacher but I agree with what you’ve said. That’s not fair at all.
