Yes I think it is an appropriate sentence maybe I’d prefer a longer non parol period and strict parol conditions on release (he might have that)

So serving 18 months is okay for bashing an old man who just wanted to put out his wheely bin?

You probably would be happy to give a child rapist 18 months too.

You are part of the problem.

No I just have different experiences than you.
It was a drug issue not a violence issue.
Prisons are not just for punishment and deterrent (they don’t work as deterrents ever) they are rehabilitation and unless your going to put everyone in jail for life you have to structure other sentences.
My brother was and Ice Addict for 20 years and was institutionalised twice for psychosis.
They are literally a whole other person.
He’s been clean and sober for 8 years now, 4 kids a beautiful wife, works in youth shelters and drug rehab programs and works in the prisons with drug related inmates who will re enter society.
Someone in a drug psychosis is completely different to someone who violently sober attacks someone.
I help my brother with his work when I’m up in Sydney, and I work with kids at risk here in Melbourne.
I beg to differ I am part of the problem, I dare guess I am more part of the practical solution than you.

No, I certainly wouldn’t give a child rapist 18 months they are two different crimes.
I think child rapists over the age of 18 should start with a mandatory 15 year sentence, if deemed of good behaviour enough the be released there should literally be a town built, that the must perminantly reside in, with farming , jobs within said community, factory jobs, an entire community.
They can only leave for valid reasons and police escorted, and instead of sending all our money to check Chinese factories for Kmart shit these sort of factories would operate in this town.
It would be like a prison in one sense (so in some ways they end up with a life sentence) however it would serve the country as a whole and we wouldn’t be paying for them till they day, they would be contributing members of society and only the extra policing would it cost. If they are caught escaping they go back to prison.
I could go into depth what I think should happen but sahm only gives so many characters.

^ I’m sure his victim saw it as a violence issue. I’m not sure how you can say it’s not a violence issue when the drug issue causes the violence. I would say the issue is both, but the core of it being the drugs.

So, here is my 2 cents.... he then should be made to do compulsory rehab. When he is sober, be educated on the effects of drug psychosis. And next drug fuelled offence be punished far more severely. He was in control of his actions when he stated using, he should know what the consequences of that can be and be held accountable when an innocent person is seriously hurt because of his choices.

Glad your brother has got his life together. I have siblings who have not been so lucky.

Yes I agree, all inmates who present with drug problems should be made to do rehab in prison (something my brother is campaigning hard for)

And what came first the violence or the drug? The drug ergo the drug is the first presenting problem. Fix that then see what’s left through sobriety and address those issues. You can’t fix drug violence first without addressing the drug. Absolutely violence is an issue but it’s secondary.

Yes I agree second offence should carry a far harsher punishment.

And don’t lose hope , as I said my brother was 20 plus years. And there’s not anything to do with luck when it comes to sobriety. It’s a choice , because ultimately taking drugs is a choice. Which is why punishment is absolutely needed however it should be partnered with rehabilitation and layered with conditions.

Throwing people in jail for every thing will just end up like America and I for one DO NOT want a prison/justice system like America!

^ I did say the core of the issue was the drugs. Violence maybe a secondary effect, but it’s a very, very serious one and should not be minimised.

Yes, there is always hope. Even if hope is in short supply.

He CHOSE to use drugs. The old man has a right to be safe.
Addicts are vocations of their own choices - we shouldn't have to be as well.

Druggies should all be sentenced to death. They’re gonna die anyway, but this way we can stop them from killing other people as well.

Bullshit excuse “ oh I was on drugs”. You chose to take drugs knowing this shit could happen. Drug addicts should be sent to prison for many many years. Take part in rehab while there of course but still be locked away for a bloody long time.
